BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Iraqis aligned with Medhi militia began trickling into police stations Monday in Baghdad to exchange their weapons for coupons they can later use to get cash from the Iraqi government.

oh ive no doubt about that. every weapon in the hands of the officials and not some illiterate rebel militant is 10 times better

Well, I suppose they could get a bonus for a chemical round while they're at it.

considering... I don't think it's all that bad of an idea.

Most people in Iraq are poor, getting rid of guns is definantly the first step - and turning in weapons for money may save a life.

I read somewhere they already had a similar program going where they give kids candy for turning in weapons. The story went something like a kid was running up to soldiers with a grenade they almost shot him ... he was just trading it in for candy.

i was watching CNN covering this today and i saw some serious firepower trading hands.

it's all good IMO.

Well yes we're all agreed that this is a good policy, but leave it to the Bush administration to botch things up. I bet after a few more weeks of people turning in weapons they launch a SUCKKAS campain and start taking over militant areas by force.

your logic is off.

the guns i saw today, like i said, were pretty serious. we're talking heavy machine guns (Dragons and 7.62mm Kalishnakovs) RPG launchers and RPG's ect.

these fighters are very poor and some have families. when faced with a choice of self preservation or trying to get another AK-47 to replace the perfectly good one you just sold in a country that has made all civilian firearms constitutionaly illegal, then that choice should be pretty simple.

there might be a simpler explaination too. maybe they ran out ammo?
