i just cant believe how big of a failure it was

quote:
There was to be capacity for up to 50 million passengers a year; at its peak Mirabel had only 2.8 million.

ouch! was it really that difficult to get to?

There is another bitter legacy: the expropriation of more than 36,000 hectares of prime agricultural land from 3,000 property owners to make way for Mirabel, at huge expense and amid allegations of political patronage and corruption.

no, i'm dead serious. They expeceted natality rates to keep the high rates in the 50-60s and a massive immigration influx (partly right).

well the immigration kept up (but i think more people went to toronto than montreal) and well we all know lucien buchard's opinion on the natality rate :stongue:

yes defienatly, more people went to Toronto, explainable by strict immigration laws in Quebec(good thing).

I don't understand why they choose Dorval(P-E Trudeau airport)?
Mirabel had better capacities.

Why do you think strict immigration policy is a good thing? I would have thought you would side with cyrus king and that immigration is a good thing. What is your opinion? i dont want to start a fight, i'm just curious.

I guess quebec is kind of in a catch 22. Whenever they immigrate people they dilute support for sovereignty as immigrants would probably vote in favour of staying. But if they dont immigrate and stay within confederation they lose power and weight within the country as more provinces grow.

And what is support like for sovereignty right now? I havnt heard anything in ages... Again i'm not trying to start anything please nobody get carried away.

sovereignty = c de l'histoire ancienne

because unlimited immigration is bad, you get too many people, too fast without enough time to integrate them and "dilute" them a bit. They go live near the same people and you create ghettos.

Compare the numbers of Ghettos in Montreal and Ontario. We're talking 10 times more in Toronto than over here.

The strict laws in quebec are mainly geared people who can speak French and have higher degrees. These two elements help people to integrate better and be more tolerant toward each other.

There's two exceptions to this rule, refugees who are endangered in their native countries (ok but every case should be carefully studied)and buisnessmen who want to settle here to start 200-300k$ (not sure about the figure) buisness project in Quebec.

I'm sick of seeing people not integrated in this province (or any other). People wearing tradional clothes and clearly demonstrate their inability or unwillingness to integrate.

One day, Ontario will wake up and find itself in the same position Quebec was before the 60s. No English anywhere, people speaking another (other) languages.

Mirabel was too far from downtown, making transportation costs high.
