Dust? record erosion?

it could be my cheap styli or maybe its dust, or even the record grinding away under the needle?
as im mixing ill notice a buildup of what looks like dust under the needle and as im sure many have experienced this, it drops the clarity of high frequencies quite a bit making the output of the track sound worse with each revolution.
it becomes a problem when the track is well under way and all of a sudden it starts to sound like ass and i have to wait till i throw in the next mix to lift the needle and get the debris out by usually just picking it off or taking the entire headshell off the tonearm to brush it off and blow any leftover dust
is this the record wearing down, is it dust accumulated in the grooves, is there some kind of household product i can use to wipe off my records before dropping the needle or am i gonna need to buy a vinyl cleaner |

from my experience this is usually caused by dusty records, which is in turn caused by keeping records in a dusty environment, which is easily solved by vacuuming around regularly. it is however also a sign that your styli may need replacing.
try it woth other people's records if you can to do a bit of a controlled experiment ;) |

could be my styli, had em for alittle under a year now, plus they're pretty cheap at like $20 each
would it be a good investment to go ahead and shoot for some good quality catridges like say ortofon perhaps
with pro carts im guessing i can keep the catridge and replace the styli correct? |

Like Tu said, it is dust on the record. Nothing to get worried about, but at the same time, you might want to clean up a bit. It definitely is a culprit in reducing sound quality.
Yes, going with Ortofon is a wise idea. And like you said, you will then only have to change the needles, not the cartridge after you buy them. All the Ortofon needles fit in the Ortofon cart |
