Needing advice for getting my first TT

I know these newbie threads can be pretty annoying, but decided to start my own since after searching a bit i'm still pretty undecided and my situation is a little bit different than usual.

So here's the deal: I've been building a very small collection of vinyls (around 20) over the last months and I've decided to finally buy a turntable (and cartridge) after Christmas. The idea is to use it just for home listening, and eventually for bedroom dj'ing in a year or two whenever i get more equipment (mixer then probably a pair of cdjs). I don't pretend to follow a career on dj'ing, neither I think I'll ever have a chance to perform live any sort of music similar to my liking (though I wouldn't say no if the chance appears), it'll be just my hobby. Therefore I'm looking for a low-end cheap turntable.

I'm looking for something that would give me good sound quality (the most important issue to me), but also would be good enough to beatmatch and spin properly. Strenght isn't the most important thing to me as i'm not going to scratch it like crazy or travel around with it, but obviously it's gotta be reliable enough so that it doesn't start falling apart in a few months.

I'm mostly undecided between the two cheaper Numark direct drive decks:

http://www.plasticsounds.com/Test/c...&products_id=36 (TT-1650)

I'd rather save some $$ and get the 1650 however I'm worried that it might be too unreliable, anyone had bad experiences with it? There's also these:

http://www.plasticsounds.com/Test/c...&products_id=30 (Reloop RP 2000 MK 3)
http://www.plasticsounds.com/Test/c...products_id=567 (Reloop RTX 2.0)
http://www.plasticsounds.com/Test/c...products_id=431 (Stanton STR8 60)

in the same price range, and i've got no clue whether they're better than the numarks or not.

As for cartdriges, I'm willing to get the best with the cleanest sound possible, however I don't have much of a clue of what to get. I'm looking into the Ortofon's but I dunno what are the diferences between the specific models:

Any help would be very apreciated, cheers.

Out of those decks the TT200 is the only decent one although i would reccomend saving up a little more for the TT500 which is the same as the TTX1 except without the digital features, I believe. Another choice to consider is checking out Ebay for used Technic 1200s, they go for about $200 plus shipping and used Techs are just as good as new Techs. If you are just going to be using the turntable to listen to records then you don't really need a DJ cart like the concordes, carts that are made just for listening sound better than DJ carts but you can't mix with them. I can't reccomend one because i'm not familiar with them.

I have the 1650s, not a bad table to be honest, although my lack of experiences on great decks is probably showing through here....
Despite what people say, cheap decks aren't absolutely , you will be able to dj, play or anything completely fine on them.
Admittedly they do not have the most accurate motor in the world so if you are using for listening they probably wouldn't be THAT good (you might get slight variations in pitch while playing). They are good for getting beat matching perfect though when you move to djing!:p The torque is only around 1, which is fine for listening, but when moving to djing it can be a bit weak, so it may be worth getting the 200s instead (1.7). Or as someone else said, used Techs will set you up pretty well.

What I do know though is that the Ortofons are an excellent cart. The sound quality is very good, they won't skip easily, pretty easy on the groove too. If you want to save a bit of money here - get the OM, not the Concorde. Same cart but different mounting, so OM is a bit cheaper. All Ortofon carts are the same, only the needle (which can be swapped between carts) differ. You can get away with buying the cheaper type carts (Pro, DJ Pro) here, and later buying more expensive replacement styli later on if you want. There are two types of styli, Elliptical (Ortofon put a suffix E to denote this type, eg Nightclub E) and Spherical (eg Pro S). The E's are better sound quality, but a bit harder on the vinyl (more wear) than the S styli.
They are a good cart and needle, others may recommend the Shure Whitelabels - another good cart but I have no experience with these. If you are planning on moving to djing soon, don't get an audiophile cart because you won't be able to use these for djing.

thanks for the tips.

this may be a silly question :p but.. why is more torque important?

and has anyone tried the reloops or stantons?

Greater torque means less time for the record to get from stop to full speed and less of a variation in speed if you need to manipulate the vinyl or the platter. This makes mixing easier b/c you don't have to worry a whole lot about accidentally stopping the platter when you make a correction due to the low torque motor.

Just get yourself Technics SL1200-Mk2 like everybody hais :haha:

one thing i'm sure.. i'm not getting used techs.

i don't trust ebay
i don't trust used things
i don't need to get the "club standart" to get used to it since i don't intend to be playing in clubs any soon, if ever

i use the TT200's. they get the job done. you will definitely want the extra torque the TT200 gives you if you plan on doing any sort of DJing. Also grab a decent cart. Right now i use the shure m44-g which again gets the job done but is really nothing special. But as i'm getting more into DJing i'm definitely wishing i just had technics. I know you don't trust ebay but in the long run you will probally wish you had just gone with the technics either new or used. Its really not about them being the club standard but more that its a quality product that will last you a long time along with making it a lot easier to start beatmatching. anyways if you have TT200 questions or anything just shoot me a PM i'm more than happy to answer anything.
