Anything by DJ Shadow, more specifically, his Endtroducing album. Also, RJD2, who has a number of good releases under his belt. I like the Deadringer album. DJ Krush has a style similar to DJ Shadow, but occasionaly uses vocals, and as a whole just isn't as good.
Mostly just make sure you check out DJ Shadow. |

I think hip hop is sux cuz
#1: low BPM
#2: it's more mainstream in NA than trance, 99.94% bar/club in EDMONTON is pwned by hip-hop
#3: it sings in English/French/Spanish/Japanese,etc (insert language here)
#4: graffiti :nervous: ( a part of hip hop culture ).. it's OK to write on YOUR WALL, but leave other people/public property ALONE..
#5: majority (?) has explicitic language...can be a problem if ya have younger brother/sister or grandma at home and want to play it out LOUD |

I'll tell you one thing. The general trend is that progressive/trance dj's generally tend to look down upon hip-hop dj's and vice-versa. Hip-hop is VERY hard to mix and it's not as easy as some may think. Even tho i don't listen to hip-hop but I still respect hip-hop dj's as they have their own unique style and vibe. After all, turntablism is also an art.
Coming back to the topic regarding hip-hop tunes, I think they di tend to follow a stereotyped pattern. The usual thug issues and the abortions and the girlfriend who's six months pregnant with the kid blah blah..'black problems' basically.
Also, when I see all wannabe thugs hopping around in oversized baggy pants looking like a cross between an oversized ape and a ing kangaroo its rather distressing. The hip-hop community has always been rather flamboyant but thats alright because hip-hop music mostly portrays the perpetually struggling rebellious black man and the 'cut a record deal and made it big' black man. I know that sounds rather superficial/shallow but if you cut through the BS thats what its all about imo.
On the other hand, it also does teach us a lot. Hip-hop has a more subtle side to it if we listen carefully.
On a final note, hip-hop beats are ...hip-hop beats. There's no question of better or worse. Trance and hip-hop are two disparate genres that will never meet..hopefully.
