2004 NHL Lockout: The waiting game ...

It almost seems like nobody is talking about hockey, now that the 2004 NHL season is in limbo. What are TAs' opinions toward the current NHL lockout? How long will it last? Who do you think is right and wrong? What will be the eventual outcome, and how will it affect you?

Personally, I support the owners. Eventually, I think players will give in, one way or another. Salary cap will make all teams competitive, and more successful, like NFL. Ticket prices may go down a bit at first as a show of gesture to fans. It will take a long time for this to happen [over a year], and will take an even longer period of time for fans to come back and support - similar to what MLB experiences after the 1994 lockout cancelled the world series.
It is obvious that the owners lost in the last agreement between the them and the players. Many owners have been losing money, and players' salaries have been skyrocketing. Now that NHL lockout is in effect, the best NHL players have booked hockey jobs elsewhere, pushing out developing players. Basically, players union is supporting the 100 or so richest players, while others must go the hard way to find new jobs. Since there is no NHL season - people who work at hockey rinks, in offices, near nhl rinks selling goods - are now going out of business or losing jobs.
What about the fans - especially the young kids - which side cares about them more? How do they feel? Do they consider hockey "business", like players do, or do they come for entertainment? Who makes more money, an NHL player, or an average fan? For me it will take DOZENS of years to make the amount of money an average players earns in a YEAR - and I pay rent, saving pennies for later? Why should I give a sh--t about pro hockey when it comes back? :whip: |

With no talks scheduled, it's obvious that no progress will be made. The drop dead date is already fast approaching (mid-december), in which the whole year will be nixed. It's even conceivable that replacement players will be used...this will include old veterans out of the current league and youngsters that are up and coming that will be satisfied with lower salaries (which will still be multi million over the years). Also, as time passes, many European players simple wouldn't care to return to the NHL and play in their home country. They already have enough $$$ to retire, and playing back at home increases their popularity there for endorsments etc. It's already documented that several euros don't plan on coming back (this season) even if they figure something out.
I, unfortunately, see the lockout going around 18 months...at which time, the union will be broken, and disolved...or the league will collapse and have to re-organize. I simply don't see an agreement being reached between Bettman and Goodenow...both of whom I think are morons. :)

| NHL is done. No one cares about it in the US except during the playoffs. Their TV ratings have been terrible. As much as I will miss the playoffs (Not a regular season fan) I think they are better off playing in their respective countries. The owners and players just don't care to make it work. They won't even spend the time to talk about it. It's pretty much in limbo for the past 5 months. |

I admit I'm not an avid hockey fan, but like you said I only watch it when the playoffs are in effect.
But my friend IS an avid hockey fan and hockey player and he is very troubled by this. Honestly like fastmp3 I didn't hear anything about this strike till my friend told me.
It sucks.. I don't think a sport should be disbanded just because of "poor ratings".
Players need to be playing for the love of the game, and not for the money.
but in today's society, that statement just falls on deaf ears.... |

| As long as they keep on making NHL games for the gamecube & X-Box i'll be happy.... we get a few highlights here and its fun to watch but there seems to be a lot that they need to sort out, and imo i cant see them doing so |

Owners had already talked about forming a new pro hockey league, terminating NHL in the process. I guess, its in case if the players remain deadlocked for a long time. |

Well said! :toothless I read about city of Kazan, which has a team in Russian Superleague, was shelling out lots of money for good nhl players, so that they can celebrate the city's 1000 year birthday in style. Pretty good. |
