Today I received an e-mail from my best friend (we just exchange e-mails now because she moved to Eastern Europe a while ago) and she told me a very sad story. (the names have been obviously changed)
Yesterday she went to her uncle's birthday and naturally spent the day talking to her cousin (Luke) and his friends (they're all the same age). Once there, she started talking to this very nice girl (Mary), who was the girlfriend of his Luke's best friend (John). After the party was over, Luke walked my friend home, as she lives across the city, so my friend started asking questions about Mary (you know, "who is she?", "where did they meet?", conversation fillers in general). During the conversation, my friend joked saying she would date Mary if she weren't commited yet. That's when Luke told my friend not to do it, because it would bring her serious health problems, because Mary had aids. My friend obviously asked Luke how he knew about it, and he said John had aids too and they were sleeping together for 2 months and not using condoms. When my friend asked Luke if Mary knew about her infection, he said she didn't, as John never told her about it.
She then asked why Luke never told Mary about it (as John probably wouldn't), and Luke simply said "it's not of my business, plus I just found out a few weeks ago". Sad thing is, Mary already has a daughter to look after.
Now I'm trying to comfort my friend (she's thinking of sending an anonymous sms to Mary), although I reckon this is not a good idea. This is something that I expected to happen in "The Horrorist" stories rather than real life.
Obviously, Mary shouldn't have slept with John before they both got tested, but hiding her from the truth only makes matters worse. If any of you can think of something nice to tell my friend, opinions are welcome. If you want to vent about what sometimes makes you lose your faith on humanity... feel free. It's sad to know this sort of people exists :( |

Did John know he had aids before sleeping with mary?
Its not really your friends place to say anything as shes only just met her...and im sure mary wouldnt want to be told she has aids out of the blue by someone shes just met. |

| that sucks man. im really sorry to hear that. my only recomendation is that "luke" tells "mary" about it, because it would probaably be a lot better to hear from a friend than it would be from a doctor a few years down the line when her health start deteriorating. Im guessing it means that the daughter has aids too. its expecially important from them all to know, because otherwise the daughter could spread it when she gets older, not knowing that she has it. |

The daughter doesnt have the AIDS virus unless the mother transmitted it to her. AIDS cannot be transmitted through a kiss since saliva does not carry the virus. If the mother breast fed the child after she became infected, than it is likely the child may be infected. |

Dude tell her to tell the girl right away! She might not have caught it yet, but if you wait it might be too late! Would you really want it on your concience to have had the power to warn her but not doing it because it wasn't socially nice?!

Her daughter is 5 years old, D-Res, she's not infected. I agree that Luke is the one that should tell Mary if John keeps on being a coward, and that he better rush before it's too late.

That's what I think as well, unless Luke keeps postponing.

My friend doesn't even have her number, she meant to send an sms as soon as she got it. In any case, Luke should do it and my friend should only step foward if he decides to be a bastard as well as John.
My friend is the one who decided to do something about it, no need to beat her up :p |

OK i didn't read through the whole post, but the general idea is that someone with AIDS slept with another person without telling them, correct??? Also, that person knew they had aids too??
I don't know about Europe, but in my country that is illegal and i think you can actually go to gaol or something like that. |

John's a coward and Luke's a dumbass. Unfortunately, there isn't anything your friend can do to change that and she probably won't feel much better from anything you can say.
I never had much faith in humanity, but almost everything I've observed as only served to reinforce my inherent doubts about the quality of our species, this included. |

I know there's nothing I can say, Arbiter, and I find this sad as well. However, if she bugs Luke and John and they don't do anything, she could sue them (for the reasons given by AJ) or tell her if she gets ahold of her phone number. It's Mary's health that is being damaged after all.

The person who infected the girl knew about it, and the lad who told my friend found out about it only one week later.

I don't know for sure if it's the same, but from what I've seen the last two summers there, I can confidently say NO.
More likely, instead of legal action, the "gift-giver" would be, well, actually brutally beaten maybe even to death by the friends of the person he purposely infected.
Legal action is not something that people in the Ex USSR republics do. |
