Oh, so that's where Opium comes from. I bet it's a pretty flower, too...
Down here, I don't recall any flowers being used as a symbol of remembrance, but hey, it's the U.S., whaddaya expect.
Thx for the info, guys. :) |

With Remembrance Day just a few weeks way, the Royal Canadian Mint has unveiled a new quarter in honour of Canadian war veterans. But a flaw in the coin already has some war veterans seeing red.
Each of the new quarters is stamped with a vibrant red poppy, a reminder of the sacrifices made by veterans. The quarters are also the world's first coloured circulation coin.
Thirty million of the quarters will be made available in limited circulation, distributed at Royal Canadian Legion branches and Tim Hortons.
Though the coins have been out for less than day, it didn't take long for the lustre to wear off. It appears that the red colour on the poppy is easily scratched off.
Many veterans find that insulting.
"That's disgusting, to be honest. I don't like that at all," says Korean War vet Robert Nisbet, as he's shown how easily the red is rubbed away.
"Now it doesn't even look like a poppy. That wasn't supposed to happen."
Ray Aalders, who served four years overseas during the Second World War, planned to give the coins to his grandchildren. He's disappointed to find the paint scrapes off.
"That's typical for the government," he scoffs.
The Mint insists with the colour should hold up during normal use.
In a statement on their website, the Mint says, "With normal wear and tear, the colour should remain for one to three years, but can be removed with harsh chemicals or friction. A permanent poppy has been struck on the coin, which will retain its full value, even if the red colour has been removed."
David Dingwall, president and chief executive of the Royal Canadian Mint, defends the coin.
"When you have 30 million units in the system, you're going to have a degree of defects out there. That's in any standardized manufacturing facility anywhere in the world."
Besides, he says, even if the red comes off, the poppy is still there; it's just harder to see.
"In our pre-tests, most Canadians won't be rubbing away the poppy itself. If it happens, it happens. But the enduring quality is the poppy that's underneath."
Dingwall says the Mint has no plans to recall the coins and hopes they will help the legion's annual poppy campaign, set this year for Nov. 1-10.

First coin ever with colour. They can't be expected to get it perfect on the first try.
You can only get the paint off if you actually try hard to scratch it off. Just putting it in your wallet won't cause the paint to fade. |

Remembrence Day happens because in World War 1 the war ended on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. It started out to remember the vets of WW1 but then was extended to honour all vets. They also observe this day in Europe. The poppy is mainly used by commonwealth countries but europeans also wear the poppie in certain instances.
Its a great day to be Canadian in Holland because the older generation remembers that Canadians were the main force of liberators of that country in WW2. This is why Canadians are so well recieved in that country in general. |

It's actually VERY easy to rub off the middle. All you have to do is touch it, and it will come off.
I have 4 of them now since I work right beside a Tim's. I think the design is awesome, and I like the incorporation of colour, but it's too bad it wont stay on.
Oh well, cool stuff :) |

Well you are a little misguided.. the red poppy and the opium poppy are two separate strains. The opium poppy is not blood red. Also there is an orange poppy which is the state flower for california, but it is only one of many poppy variants.
Poppy gallery
As for the coin, I think it's kinda ugly! *I haven't seen one first hand, but I saw one in the globe and mail on friday* |

i was doing my regular weekend sorting of laundry and getting change ready - and i put in this quarter and thought it looked funny with a red dot! I hadn't seen anything on the news or read anything in the paper (as usual)...
but i find it doesn't look anything like the online pic or the TV pictar that I have now scene. the poppy sure as hell isn't as red - but the Concept is wikked!!!
