Media Levies?

Here in canada, we have to pay a small levy on blank media, such as cdrs, blank audio and video tapes etc. I'm not sure if it passed, but they were trying to get a levy going on mp3 players, and other new storage devices as well.
I'm not sure where the money goes, i've just started reading up on it, but i thought i would post a thread to see if anyone else has it in their country.
I dont really see a point to it, because i doubt the money works its way back into the pockets of the artists, or movie directors, or whatever youre copying...so it doesnt really compensate for our governments lax copyright laws.

It gives politicians cover from the record companies, who want a tougher copyright law.
ALthough I should mention that the Lieberals are seriously thinking about passing a tougher new Copyright Act anyway. |
