^^^yes...understandable that people have low self esteem. but from another standpoint, if 3/4 of whats typed in a thread is greek and latin to them, how can they ever even think of adding their $.02???
and no these are not my "friends". These are TAs that meet me at parties and mention such things to me... |

Yeah, my response was pure jokes...kinda in an oxymoronic kinda way. If there's one thing that's hard to express on internet, it is humour. I guarantee alot of people who read that probably thought.."pffft, wanker" without realizing the humorous intent..
I remember when I first started lurking on TA I was so afraid to post cuz I thought I'd get shat on, little did I realize that it was 99% jokes and then that 1% of the time someone takes it too seriously and turns it into a flame war. |

I think I'll respond here, because I'm probably seen as one of the people whose contribution was a bit too scientific.
IGNORANCE IS NOT THE ANSWER!
If you want to discuss a topic, there are always people who just want to say what they feel (often based on absolutely no evidence, reasoning, or logic). This is called IGNORANCE. If I say I think the Earth is supported on the back of a giant tortoise, it's a valid argument, but with no evidence to back it up, and plenty of common sense arguments to refute it, it is just an ignorant claim.
A lot of people live their whole lives like this. Their beliefs, opinions, or even their entire religion may be nothing more than reading something that somebody else wrote, and believing every word of it without ever questioning the sources or trying to think for themselves. In my opionion, this is really disturbing, because so many people are just opening themselves up to be led around like cows. I could start posting that a thread that trance causes kidney bleeding, but with no evidence, what merit would it have? Would some people here believe it? Possibly.
Some people use the excuse that they just don't have enough background information to question what they're given (I mean... I'm sure some of you take prescriptions without understanding the chemical reasons why the doctor prescribed them to you.) This is fine when you can trust your sources... but for things like philosophy, there are no real right or wrong answers because the data is not empirical... anything in physics past einstein deals almost entirely with thought experiments and hardcore mathematics.
I didn't see any hard math equations or complex formulas or concepts. I'm sure many of you could have understood what we were talking about had you read it slowly and made the effort to make sense out of it. If you don't want to put in that effort and you'd rather just remain ignorant, that's cool too... nobody's forcing you. But on the forum, the intellectuals of the group have the freedom to do so... there are at least 3 or 4 of us talking about quantum, dimensionality, etc... and it's a good discussion IMO.
I don't think we ruined the discussion. The decision of others to stop posting turned the thread into OUR thread. There are many threads that I'll read, but not necessarily reply to every post, because some of them I just don't really give a about, or I don't have the background info to go into discussion about. I'm ignorant of some posts cuz I don't have the time to enlighten myself on the full implications of every single one of them.
You can add your $0.02 without responding to every post. Don't feel intimidated... that just shows you have low self-esteem. Relax, nobody really cares what you think anyway... we're just coming to enjow a nice discussion... not to get personal (although that does sometimes happen, it didn't this time, and that didn't seem to be your complaint).

k theres a difference between replying to scientificly related threads and threads that ask a simple question and just want a simple answer
heres a hypothetical situation of how threads wander on TA:
threadstarter: i like girls with big boobies, do you?
post#1: i like them too..
.....
....
Post#20: its in my understanding that flesh matter is inversely proportionate to brain matter leading me to believe that "threadstarter" digs ditzy women.

It is hard to control the way other people response or answer a simple question. Some people can give a one word answer and some give a 1000 words essay answer. We just have to accept it & try not bring it up to the next level which lead into an arguement.
I rarely post on here not because I do not have an opinion, but I rather chose to listen what other people have to say. TA message board has turned into a TA "Debate" board. |
