Modes of Resoning- could it help us

I am seeing many threads, while good intentioned, fizzle or breakup and worse still- some not until egos are bruised esp. here in TOTA..:p

I took this course "Modes of Reasoning" a while back at University and wondered if anyone else has or is taking it. Lately, I find myself rummaging thru my notes on this course and capturing examples of certain fallacies that occur in some arguments on these threads that die out. I see fallacies that others create and yes! I am aware of some of those I contribute to as well.....I mean really, everyone should be allowed some room to err as we are human after all :D

lately tho we seem to have been caught in let's face it - a ton of mindless dribble. If we could apply some, if not all of the rules for arguments discussed in the text for this course to some of our threads-posts, perhaps we could all learn a thing or two through arguing systematically.

Its a thought I couldn't resist sharing.
Inputs welcome.

I think a decent thread breaks down when:

- people start calling each other names and insulting each other

- people start whining about content or topic

- people start whining about "threadjacking". Conversations in real life naturally transform from one topic to another with a connecting segway in the middle. Why should it not be the same on a messageboard thread?

I'm taking something similar called "Theory of Knowledge"... prolly along the same lines.

I think the threads on here are just fine. Never had a problem with the discussion... I mean, would you rather if we only had 5 members?

When you have a group of people who think they know everything about music or whatever, that's usually what will happen when you try to have a conversation. People at my school are like that, they think they know all and that they're smarter and better than everyone else, and every conversation ends up with one trying to prove another wrong, their ego is always getting in the way.

About fallacies, well that's what the know-it-all's will use when they DON'T know what they are talking about, and they try to say anything that will give them a one-up over everyone else.

nah! not at all --- I is not my intent to imply that such a system is a pre-requisite for anyone to post. But merely to direct dialogue at ways in how we can improve communication. I care about the TA community which I am a part of, that's why I am interested in the sharing of ideas. Lately, there have been a number of unnecessarily harsh threads-posts IMHO ( one I am not proud of ). Hopefully its just a phase but discussing ways of addressing with some of the issues is not a bad idea - right.

Peace.

I am taking "Modes of Reasoning" right now actually.

I took a course @ UWO called "Critical Thinking & Argument" which is probably very similar.

you ing .

umm, the reason that most threads go to is when certain people interject and refuse to state their opinion once and go on to repeat themselves 50 million times in one thread.
