I consider myself quite good in making basslines.. however i've been trying to make some sesto sento-ish psy/goa basslines lately and failed miserable..
Anyone got tips for this type of rolling bassline? Seems to be heavy EQ and arpeggiation involved, and not much of compression or sidechaining with kick. If you listen to di.fm psy/goa channel for hour you know what i'm talking about :) |

| I don't want to spend an hour or two listening to a radio station I don't normally listen to just so I can answer your question. Post up a sample and I'll be able to help. |

| Sounds like random notes with a 303. |

try this:
put 2 8th notes like this: C3,D3 and alternate them in that order then drop it to A2,B2 and differnt varitions it creates a kinda rolling bassline if i get what a rolling bassline is. bassically what it does it is rolls from one note to the other i dont know if this is what your trying to achive if it isnt im sorry. |

here is your answer for the psy bassline:
-xxx-xxx-xxx-xxx
and you can shake it up a little by raising it an octave here and there.
-xxx-Xxx-xxx-xxX
this alone won't give you the psy sound, however. Psy music plays on your subconscious and requires a great deal of tweaking and reverb/delay plugins.
Throw LOTS of different reverb and delay plugs on this bassline (and everything else for that matter) and it will blow you away. Listen to it high and it will take you to another place all together!
Use lots of FX too, and do the craziest things you can to your vocal sample.
Cheers and good luck, psy is the hardest type of electronic music to make but also the most rewarding! |

| ok since i really cant produce any psy as i love the way it sounds but myself cant figure out the production theory behind it. ive tried many times to create a psytrack and usually end up with some tranced out dirty ass techno track and overall end up saying you and never touching the project again. id like to know how to accomplish being able to make the intensely intresting sounds that are accompined by psy. for example what waveforms are common and at where does it cross the line from psy to choatic mess. i find alot of times my basslines will be decent but my problem is being able to get the leads to follow the bassline and achive an psy feeling to it. maybe im asking the wrong questions but if you can try to get what im asking any response would be nice. as i find for the most part alot of people dont discuss psy production here its mostly all supersawed whored up trance. |

A majority of modern psy-producers will spend extraordinary amounts of time working on their basslines, just as a majority of TA producers will spend extraordinary amounts of time working on a supersaw. I'm not saying it's true for everyone, but it is true for most, and their emphasis on basslines is like our emphasis on supersaws.
To really get Psy, I think you have to follow the psy philosophy fairly strictly. That is, in trance, the philosophy is (generally) to use a supersaw with an epic emphasis on the buildup and breakdown portions of a track. With psy, I find that there are two leading philosophies:
1) Make everything synthetic, if possible. This means you should try to avoid the use of samples for things like percussion or instrumental lines.
2) The weirder, the better. Of course this isn't necessarily true of the more melodic forms of psy, but in general, psy thrives off of the atmosphere created by the sound effects and the exceptionally broad range of sonic palette given to the producer.
If you follow those two basic guidelines, you should start seeing a shift away from dirty, trancy techno and a shift into psy-trance.
As for the basslines posted:
Example 1
The "rolling" effect you described is achieved by raising the octave of the upper bass layer at the end of the bass loop.
Example 2
Same as in example 1, only the bassline also dips below the base key right after rising above.
Example 3
Again, a small melody that remains relatively constricted, that is, the notes don't waver too far from the base key until the last note that goes up the most to create the rolling effect.
The most important thing you'll find in creating psy basslines is to avoid placing a bass note over a kick so the bass and the kick really hit you individually and don't have to fight each other for space in the frequency spectrum. Actually this is true for most all genres, except French House, as it likes putting a subaudio bassline right on the kick by HP the kick and LP the bass.
Yes the intrumentation sounds like a 303, although the Nord lead is reputed to be the synth for psy....kinda like the jp80x0 for trance. Essentially what you're going to want for a psy bassline is an analog-sounding saw wave. Dirty on the edges, but still digitally smooth enough to really kick. |

| i think a good vsti to use for psy would probly be audio realism bassline and also refx beast. i found that alot of the refx synths are good for making really dirty nasty sounds. i personally enjoy using beast, plasticz, and junoX2, by refx. |
