Question on mixing techniques [pvd, tiesto, etc]

I have a question guys/gals
When mixing, how do you do the tricks that DJs such as PVD and Tiseto do? Its like when they are undergoing the mix, they negate the kick then turn it right back on. I was wondering what knob combinations this was.
If you have a question on what I mean please reply back .. I am eager to turn it up a notch with my mixes..

usually the bass EQ knob or a kill switch :)
sometimes you can tweek the mids or highs at the same time to get a more balanced effect |
