Is it safe to have oral sex when either partner has a canker sore -- not a cold sore, but a canker sore? Does the same virus cause both and can you cause genital herpes with a canker sore?

Dear Blister Mouth,
Canker sores have not been proven to be caused by a virus, and they are not contagious, or a sign of any other disease. However, if the person performing oral sex has a canker sore in his/her mouth, and s/he comes into direct contact with his/her partner's semen, vaginal fluids, or blood, s/he may well be increasing his/her risks of contracting HIV from his/her partner if s/he is infected. Any type of lesion or opening in the mucous membrane of the mouth makes transmission of HIV more viable than if the lesion weren't there. You'll need to make decisions about how much risk you want to take with your partner -- if you want to be extra safe, avoid oral sex when canker sores are present, or use a condom or dam during oral sex to protect each other.

P.S.: Canker sores appear more often under the tongue and inside the mouth than cold sores caused by the herpes virus. Canker sores can be sparked by stress, trauma to the area in your mouth, allergies, or by a reaction to a particular bacteria.

Dear Alice,
I sometimes get herpes blisters (HSV-1) next to or on my lips and this is the case with my girlfriend as well. I was wondering if there is any danger of causing herpes on her genitals (either HSV-1 or HSV-2) by performing oral sex on her when I have a sore around my mouth.

YES!!!
When you (and your girlfriend) have herpes blisters, or cold sores, in and around your mouth and facial areas, it is highly likely that genital herpes will develop when these herpes lesions and/or its contents come into di rect contact with the genital area, such as during oral-genital sex. (Kissing can pass cold sores from one person to another!)

usually the causative organism in herpes is hsv-2 but herpes can also be caused by hsv-1 (although it is not commonly as hsv-2). and most of the time hsv-1 is the bug behind cold sores.
so the answer is yes. remember that cold sores/herpes never go away.
