Another president took office today.

this is truly a historic moment. after 5000 years of existence

quote:
World leaders congratulated Karzai on his win, with British Prime Minister Tony Blair telling the House of Commons the poll "was the first ever election for the Afghan people and a remarkable tribute to them and to the power of democracy."
1. In a letter to Karzai, EU foreign affairs chief Javier Solana said Afghans had "bestowed on you a strong and clear mandate to carry forward the democratic transformation of the country."
German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder echoed this view, saying the election was a "new, decisive step on the road to stability and democracy".
Pakistan welcomed Karzai's victory, saying already-friendly ties between the neighbors will be further strengthened under his rule.
"We are happy President Karzai has won the first democratic elections in Afghanistan and we wish him all success," Information Minister Sheikh Rashid told A FP.

From the Telegraph today:

quote:

Mr Bush won because he has an idea about what threatens America - and the whole of Western civilisation - and what to do about it. Mr Kerry didn't. All he knew was that he didn't like Mr Bush's idea. The Bush view may, of course, be mistaken, but a positive rival analysis has yet to emerge.

I think that's pretty much it. Bush's idea may not be the best, but Americans perceive a threat, and Bush is the only one with an actionable plan to counteract that threat. The plan: democratize the violent Middle East before it's too late, because as the old political science quote goes, "democracies don't go to war with each other."

Afghanistan, welcome to the club. Iraq, you're next.

First off, glad to see the elections in Afghanistan. Most people agreed with that action too, keep in mind. There's still a lot of work to do there though, which is why many did not want to shift resources. Women were only allowed to vote if a man allowed them too and women who are raped can be killed for not saving themselves for marriage, among other things. Better than the Taliban, but lots moreto do.

The thing that I'm really worried about with that democratize the Middle East plan is does that mean we keep having wars as long as there is a perceived terror threat somewhere in the Middle East and who is next? And if so, there will be a draft.

He may have been democratically elected, but Germany was not a democracy under his authoritarian rule. That was actually a pretty good quote.;)
State of Matter
There is a perceived threat, Intelligence confirms the perceptions, but the answer is not to go to a country that's not involved (Iraq) and bring war upon them.

Im really glad to see that people are turning out to vote over in Afghanistan though, that's awesome.
