I'm sorry but a nord lead 3 sounds phatter dry, than any fruity thing wet.
And i have yet to hear of the first producer who got big with fruity loops (or even a record deal?). Even if you know how to tweak the filter, it's weak (the filter when you click on an instrument....WEAK!) |

Well, I've used FruityLoops for a while, and I still can't get anywhere near a professional sound.
Example: The first thing most people would try, is to get a good synth sound, to play with a melody. Well, you immediately find that FruityLoops doesn't have any good synths in the built-in instruments. So then you go to SimSynth, a plug-in. That's what I did. No matter what I do and what effects I experiment with, the synth sound that I get is always thin, artificial, and sounds like a thin wire! My goal is just to get a full, "thick" synth sound. I have a keyboard at home that has about a 100 instruments, and, among them, 32 synths. Some are "crisp", others "long" like strings. But all of them are rich and "full". In FruityLoops I still have no idea how to get anywhere near this normal hardware sound.
So the people who say that even the most primitive hardware offers a more professional sound are right.
By the way, why does FruityLoops have hundreds of effects and samples like "wow" and "ooh" -- but almost no real library of instruments, like strings, synths, guitars, good drums, -- in short, your average keyboard assortment? And the hierarchy tree is structured very strangely! You really have to dig into the tree to find anything of use. As an aside, 99.9% of all of FruityLoops' samples are completely useless. It doesn't offer what is needed, it offers a lot of useless crap. |

Well.. I agree with both of you, fruity loops isn't the best.
my roomate just bought a Yamaha MOTIF and that thing sounds beautiful. with no processing of any kind!
and it's tough to get those kinds of sounds out of fruity loops right away.
and the sample library is limited, and organized in a lame way.
all I am trying to say is that softsynths, real synths, hardware, FX modules, turntables, even bongo drums, are only tools for making music. some are better for somethings, some are better for others, and some are flexible and do a lot of different stuff. fruity loops is a pretty flexible tool, once you get to know it. there is nothing stopping you from recording that nordlead sound into a wav file and using that as a sample in fruity loops.
try layering your sounds, use the TS404, several instances of it, 3 identical kick drums, one left channel, one center, one right, and layer those etc. you just have to massage it a little.
as for the tinny sound, a lot of that can be attributed to the simple fact that it's digitally sampled waveforms, therefore they are not truly round and smooth, but rather "staircased". this makes them not sound "full", and "rich". also it gets translated from digital to analog and comes out your soundcard, which inherently has some noise.
but I think if you took that signal, and did some post processing of it, you could make it sound huge.. |

| hmm I should have popped this in my last post only just came to mind.... it seems as though people really dont think fruityloops is a great piece of software for this. Is there anything @ all decent ? What would u people recommend as you guys seem to know what your talking about etc. |

Well i think fruityloops does the job well for sample based music. But trance isn't sample based. What i mean is that when u sample a sweeping pad, and you play a melody with it, played at lower key the sweep goes slower too, and the sample is longer. So that kinda stuff requires a synth. I guess Reason's a good way to go if you're into PC only. If you can bare tinny synths ;)
And for sampling expensive gear, as somebody suggested, goes the same...if you sample a c3 note and you play it an octave higher, the note is only half as long. Which is a pain if the tone has an "end".
But, this is more true than anything indeed; It's the guy behind the knobs, not the gear :) Be creative and figger out ways to deal with yer limitations |

OK. Can someone with FL experience give me the specific settings needed to get a good synth sound, then? Just a single example. |

| You can't tell me everyone has paid for this program here. Could someone point me in a direction to obtain a copy of FL? Or PM and I can provide a fast ftp site to upload too? I wouldn't mind mucking about with it myself. |

| This is for the guys talking about the weak softsynth sound... IMHO, the PRO52 VST and RETRO-AS1 softsynths are pretty damn decent, almost "good". The scorpion is also a nice simple analog wannabe, and it does fairly good eurotrance fuzzy lead synths. TS404, Simsynth, and Wasp are weak :P. I'm a little bit of a lazyass as far as production software, I still use fruity, even though i have reason and cubase and LAP. Don't ask me why I havent even unrar'ed them :clown: oh, also try the linplug synths, they are decent. |

I tried that pro 52 vst, well just got it I dunno why people think its so good I dunno why... well I guess i haven't learned how to use it properly.
I haven't heard of that RETRO-AS1 softsynths where can I get a 'demo' ? :D |

| I've got such a 'demo', just give me an FTP to upload it to ;) |
