that's a lot of servers ... but it seems it's not enough, because i see pages reload slow at peak times.. maybe another server won't hurt...

All servers are on 100Mbps burstable links with the download servers using lower-grade (Cogent) bandwidth.

maybe that's why there's a delay sometimes.. have you thought about jumping to Gbps? how much are Gpbs switches nowadays???

and thank you for spending a lot of money for this free website..

The slowness is not because of bandwidth... You can saturate a 100Mbps link on a ty 400Mhz computer with 128 megs of ram and a 5400 rpm IDE hard drive. :)

The slowness is from excessive disk I/O which causes bottlenecks when retrieving data from the databases in order to send out the info for the threads to everyone.. Search was the main problem with this... If I turn off search I can probably handle 1200 ppl as well as I can handle 850 now.
jon
how big is the forum database atm?

2.4 gigs

A lot of it is indicies though - if I remove those, it'll probably be about 1.4 gigs
jon
is it possible to host it on a ram-drive? or is that way to complex to set up?

that's a lot of data .. if you think about it, that's about 1,400,000,000 characters, if we say that every word is 5 characters long on average, then we can say that you have about 300,000,000 words ..

that's a lot of words.
