On the radio there was some old guy from some "anti ing everything" lobby saying that the tests would only serve the appearance of condoning the use of ecstasy which the australian government doesn't want to do.
Surely they don't think that their war on drugs has had any result?
If they took the millions they spend trying to fight a fight they will never win and invested it in better harm minimisation and drug education I'm sure everyone would be better off.
It makes me sick seeing kids like that one who died on the mitzu, double dropping even when they have only tried e a couple of times. Maybe if he had been better educated than the old "just one pill can kill" campaign, he wouldn't have been so stupid. |

yeah, they used to have these things setup at the docks parties too from memories.. was it "rave safe" who organised it?
good on them anyways.. no one wants to see people dying at a party. |

A standard pill tester will test for the precense of MDMA, you can not tell how much MDMA is present from that test. Depending on what test kit they use, a pill containing MDMA and PMA will still test up as MDMA....
We had these tester people at last years summer enchanted and winter enchanted raves. They basically took your pills, tested them with the full range of test kits available and put all the results up on pillreports, not scoring them or anything, Just giving the test results.
It is a "step forward" so to speak, but basically they will only be doing what any smart person would ALREADY BE doing and testing what things they are putting into their bodies before doing it...

I can't find it now but I remember reading in the age a statistic like "One in four young people have tried ecstasy". I found this interesting, I thought usage would be a lot lower.
I can see both sides of the argument...
For publicly-funded testing - saves lives, reduces chance, helps to reduce bad pills being sold (if every pill is tested and results announced by a government body the likelihood of people purchasing these pills falls, therefore pills either become higher quality or dissapear off the market), better quality testing.
Against publicly-funded testing - government and police seen to not condone, issues of supporting drugs avoided, upholds police view of them being illegal, drugs are only used by people who delve in to the black market, etc.
My view - There was some truth in the Green's idea of legalising illegal drugs... it wipes out or minimises the black market, brings producers and sellers into the 'light' market, decreases risks and may save lives. Of course, doing so may lead to more and more people taking up the drug, the public may see it as condoned and abuse it. Its tricky and who knows which choice is correct.
Does anyone have any statistics on Amsterdam?
I guess its better to stay with the current than risk the change. |

so what happens if they test a pill say it is fine and then the person goes aight drops it and then drops dead? can the family sue?
good idea nonetheless just gotta sort out that little problem! |

Only if the death was likely attributable to an inaccurate test result I'd imagine. So if there was K in the pill that hadn't been detected (and should have been given the testing equipment available) and the user ends up a drooling, comotose mess on the floor as a result, then the drug-testers could well end up in some trouble. If however, they hand back the pill, say its fine and the user ends up dropping 4 and dances for 17 hours without water before collapsing in an exhausted heap at the end of the night, then I doubt that the family of the "victim" wouldn't have much of a case. |

PREMIER Steve Bracks has rejected a request for a legal ecstasy-testing trial as interstate police warn up to 5000 pills with dangerous side effects have flooded the streets.
The Federal Government also moved against the trial yesterday, saying it would make a mockery of the "tough on drugs" policy.
Royal Adelaide doctors asked Victoria Police for a legal amnesty to test ravers' pills for potentially deadly ingredients at a dance party this month.
Mr Bracks refused to support the trial despite it being backed by his chief drug advisers and The Australian Drug Foundation.
"The government is not at all considering looking at testing for these tablets," he told 3AW.
"It is not part of our policy."
Mr Bracks said support for the trial would effectively be condoning testing kits that are not proven to have clear results.
But the NSW police alert about dangerous tablets may put further pressure on the Government to consider a legal ecstasy-testing trial.
Police said the tablets could cause severe nose bleeds, blackouts and an increased risk of brain hemorrhaging.
The tablets have no name or symbol and officers are yet to get hold of any to analyse their chemical content.
NSW drug squad commander Detective Superintendent David Laidlaw said the influx of the pills was particularly alarming with end-of-school parties planned in the coming weeks.
"(The drug suppliers) could have cut them up with anything," he said.
"That's the trouble with these back yard manufacturers . . . the unsuspecting drug user gets this type of drug and they don't know what the compounds are."
With the summer festival season some of the tablets could reach Victoria.
Royal Adelaide hospital research fellow Dr David Caldicott said if the dangerous pills were out there it increased the need for testing. |

oh well... lets hope we see the government coming to the realisation that their 'tough' drug policies don't help nobody somewhere in our lifetimes. |

seems the medical fraternity in adelaide are the only ones with any common sense here. Wasn't it the same group who were th eonly ones to annouce that the red mitsi's were mdma and caffeine, no pma to be found? and now the nsw police put out a ridiculous press release about unsafe pills, but only say there's no markings that identify them. do they really think if they cry wolf people will take notice?
