Trancey Progressive Recommendations?

I'm new to DJing...I've been practicing here and there for a while, and finally got my own tables, and am faced with the daunting task of buying records now.
I like interesting, progressive-type music...does anyone have any recommendations of where to start? I'd like it to be trancey ...mildly psychedelic maybe? I'm looking for both higher and lower energy stuff too.
My problem is I've heard a lot of music I've liked, I just have no ing clue who it was. |

I suggest you do one or all of the following:
(1) Listen to a liveset from a well-known DJ such as Tiesto, Armin Van Buuren, Ferry Corsten, Paul Van Dyk, Sasha, Digweed or whoever and have a look at the TRACKLIST to identify some tracks that you like.
(2) Listen to a well-known internet radio show to find some tracks in the style that you like.
(3) Go through online record stores and listen to lots of samples to find stuff that you like (this can take a while :p)
(4) Go to your local record store and ask someone for recommendations. You can have a listen to the tracks there on the TTs.
I'm just starting out too, and i figured it would be better to buy some of the "classics" that i love first, rather than new tracks that (mostly) have a very short listening life these days.
By the time i learn to beatmatch and get decent, most 'new' tracks will be out-of-date and tired, so i am getting classics that will still be awesome to listen to six months or years from now. |

Get "Xpander EP" by Sasha.
On this you have 4 tracks ranging from trancey prog house, breakbeat right through to ambient/chillout - a definite classic.
Try releases on the Bedrock label as well. They more often than not release excellent prog house.
Maybe get a few compilations as well. They are relatively cheap and you get quite a few tracks. Stuff like the Global Underground releases would be a decent place to start. |
