BORA BORA CLOSES FOREVER
Words: Terry Church
World famous Ibizan beach bar Bora Bora, in Playa D'en Bossa, has closed for good. Long serving resident DJ Gee told DJmag he had little choice but to abandon the project after constant pressure from local police about noise complaints.
A message posted on Bora Bora’s website by Gee said:
“Jealousy and greed are very powerful and destructive human emotions and unfortunately we now see them being used against all who have been coming to Ibiza to enjoy the party and make it wealthy over the past thirty years or so.
“Well a few clubs closed us all down and so there's not a lot left on this island except a Space that smells of rotting cherries and a forgetfulness of those that have made them wealthy and thinks of no one or anything else but it's own greed and self obsession.
"The small sharks that have gone along for the ride in this destruction are doing so because they are running scared and have a jealously of their own to get out of their system, they have also been used as a form of camouflage to disguise those responsible. But the cowardly act has been uncovered, people are really not as stupid as they think.
“I wonder who is next, and when there's no one left (which is not a long time away), I'm sure they will be picking on each other again.
“So now this years' closing parties have taken on a new theme, it's now the celebration in the closures of others that will be celebrated by those responsible.”
DJmag has spoken to DJ Gee and is currently investigating alleged claims about possible illegal and anti-competitive action by Ibizan club owners.

:whip: |

From an email circulated by Bora Bora today, May 20:
We would like to say the biggest thank you possible to all the thousands of friends who have emailed and been in touch to shown their sadness and disbelief after the forced shut down of music at Bora Bora Ibiza last season, we thank you also for the kind words, good wishes and incredible support to continue Bora Bora in some way, we are still going through some of your mail and as we like to answer each one personally we thank you also for your patience if you are waiting for a reply. We are happy to say that because of your encouraging pressure and support to keep going that we are now able to announce some good news that we hope you will like. Yes even though it has been well reported we can now confirm that Gee will now be playing at Bora Bora for the opening on the 27th May 2005 and although this may not be new news to some we did not want to announce this until we were as near to 100% confident ourselves about it first, after the disappointment last summer with the closure we really wanted to be sure as always of the truth first to avoid disappointment or miss lead any of you.
After a meeting with the Jet management last week they have reassured us that all is good for the opening. We would still like to point out though that due to the volatile way of some of the islands powers, that you can never predict 100% how long things can last and while we hope that the opening will not also be the closing party, at this time in Ibiza you can never really tell, we are though in a much stronger position this year as last week Jet obtained the final stamp for the new club licence, this means that apart from our daytime activities there is also a new night time club which will be open sometime in June/July onwards, we hope that there will not be any confusion between the daytime Bora Bora and the night club which for want of a better name we will call Bora Bora night club.
While this is good news for the Bora Bora faithful we would like to express our sadness for all the other venues who throughout the year have experienced similar problems as we did last summer, It’s been a bitter blow to all those that come to the island year in, year out. Who would have thought that music and dance could be such a crime on the island of Ibiza? Who would have thought that there could be such malice from those so selfish that they don’t understand that it’s better to work together sometimes maybe? With this in mind and not wishing to be outside of the law (however crazy it may seem at times) there have been some necessary adjustments to the structure of Bora Bora. Under construction at the moment is a glass wall extending from the new club around some of the terrace section, we are confident that it will not change things too much, its still free entrance during the day, we still have the Bora Bora vibe thanks to you and of course there are the tables!
Once the work is completed we will show pictures of how it all looks and announce some very interesting events and concepts for the new club in the next BB style letter.
Once the new night club opens there will have to be a cover charge when necessary for the evenings to pay for the drink that is included in the price of the ticket and to cover the cost of the promoters, DJs, flights, accommodation and fees etc, Jet informs us that the ticket charge will be as low as possible and that the bar prices in the club will be the same as the daytime bar of Bora Bora, on other nights including the opening night and the first few weeks it will be free entrance. |
