I lived in England for about 5 months. From what I could tell people really just walk wherever the hell they feel like. I had to do a lot more bobbing and weaving there than I do in America, where people seem to be adamant in walking on the right side of the sidewalk most of the time.

In Australia the custom is that the people closest to the road should be walking in the opposite direction to the cars so that if need be they can see they have to get out of the way.

i.e. we drive on the left hand side so people also walk on the left hand side in theory... but it never really happens

I was gonna say just that! :) Although in school they told us to walk on the left.

Whichever looks less busy, if you see a gap in the people then take it.

Anyone who's ever walked down, say, Princes Street on a busy afternoon will know what I mean...

come on, you can do better than that. at least when we rip you we do it with a bit of style ;)

as for which side of the path... whichever is empty. our school tried to employ a 'keep left' strategy though, it never really worked.
