Nobody ruins soccer like Seven

A few years ago Channel Seven bought the rights to televise live games of the NSL and to present a weekly highlights package.
They didn't show ONE live game during the league stage of the season, and their highlights show was broadcast at midnight. The network's high positioned directors also held a celebration dinner with 2 AFL chiefs after Australia's 3-0 loss in the crunch game against Uruguay in 2001.

I just wanted to make everyone aware of what s Channel Seven are and what extents they went to to bury the beautiful game. They paid 2 million dollars to SA ensure the death of soccer in Australia which they nearly succeeded in doing, to promote AFL.

This thought/issue came into my mind with the recent passing of Johnny Warren, who was incensed at the whole thing when it happened. Please feel free to share your views on this.

I agree with you, they are s allright..

I totally agree with you.

The commentators where , nothing like the true SBS commentators
if you want the best sport in the world to succeed in Australia you dont let channel 7 handle it.

Soccer in Australia is generally ed up. Its a total shame, wish it were different.

Well that's why they are trying to start something fresh, something that will hopefully succeed - A-League

Oh, and soccer will never be popular in Australia - the majority of Australians find it dead boring tbh.

I dont know how u figure that one??:conf: have a look at when world cup is on, it's absolutelty mayhem in all our pubs cafes etc.

Australians dont embrace soccer because it doesnt get the exposure that afl / nrl gets. Because we do so well in the other two codes we also tend to promote them more ( like swimming @ olympics )

I could never endure a whole game of afl or nrl but love to watch soccer and most non victorians i have spoken to agree.

Yes, soccer is the most played sport in Australia (but dont tell any of the commercial networks that because they too will up like 7 did). The new A-League is the best thing that could have happened to soccer in this country and finally we make a very good move to join our Asian neighbours with their leagues and this opens the door to so much more. Soccer has only been a recent success in the Asian nations and look how well its taken off. We can only be smart enough to jump on their bandwagon and share the success and even talent.

Its actually a really exciting time and my mates and i will be in full support of the new league. We're finally heading back to games!

EDIT: R.I.P Johnny Warren.

...even the print media coverage doesnt give soccer australia much help, it amazes me how footy managed to squeeze 2-3 pages of BS in the papers, way after the season is finished, and even to cut down the soccer coverage during world cup just to milk out a few meaningless footy 'commentary'...

hopefully the A-league will take soccer ahead this time..

:D :D

haha commentators.
Reminds me of the simpsons ep where Soccer comes to Springfield.

Kent Brockman: Halfback passes to the center. Back to the wing. Back to the center. Center holds it. Holds it. uhh.. Holds it.

Mexican announcer: Halfback passes to center! Back to wing! Back to center! Center holds it! Holds it!! HOLDS IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ah god work is boring. :whip:
