Google Makes Gmail Portable

Google is extending its webmail service to handheld devices, and adding access to e-mail applications, including Microsoft's popular Outlook, in the latest Gmail upgrade announced Wednesday.
The Web search leader said it is rolling out POP (post office protocol) support that enables Gmail customers to download messages to Outlook and other client-side applications.

Messages can be read on- or off-line on such devices as PDAs or mobile phones that feature POP technology.

E-mail Portability

Google also is offering free automatic forwarding of messages to a customer's specified e-mail, with the end result being e-mail portability.

Gmail, launched in April, lets users search through their messages, and includes 1 gigabyte of free storage. It is recognized as the first Webmail service to integrate e-mails with search capability.

Yahoo, Microsoft Competing

Yahoo responded by increasing the amount of storage offered with its e-mail service, but without adding search. Gmail also gave Google an edge over Microsoft, which only recently jumped into the Web search market and is playing catch-up.

In a posting on the company's blog, Google revealed that it has doubled the number of pages in its index to some 8 billion pages.

Vice president Bill Coughran noted in the posting that the increase is not merely more copies of the same pages, "but truly diverse results that give more information."

Access Choices

The objective is to provide access to Gmail in a variety of ways, and to make the service portable, said Georges Harik, director of googlettes, or new projects, for the company. "With POP, users can access their account from just about anywhere, using this open standard for e-mail accounts," he told NewsFactor.

Beyond portability, POP lets users switch back and forth between Gmail and their Outlook or other accounts, which is particularly useful for individuals on the move and those using devices such as mobile phones and BlackBerry handhelds, said Harik.

He also pointed out that the download capability is offered at no charge by Google, while others such as Yahoo and Hotmail typically collect an annual fee of US$20 for the same type of service. "That should help us widen the user base as we take this from the invitation-only phase to a broader rollout," Harik said.

yeah, that's all nice... but:

"Server Error

Gmail is temporarily unavailable. Cross your fingers and try again in a few minutes. We're sorry for the inconvenience."

is a pain in the ass sometimes.

Why can't people simply stick to a mail forwarding to their rogers.com (or whatever ISP) account?
