well calculations differ from a country to another...
how far is Mississauga from downtown Toronto? |

some of their "inclusions" on that list are a bit dubious...Windsor is added to Detroit? erm...ok...San Fran. incl. Oakland and San Jose? sketchy...those might be considered a fair "agglomeration", I suppose...but give me a break, lol ;)
I'd be curious to know what they consider as "Toronto"...the 905 is just as close as some of their other inclusions are for other places.
but...this isn't a contest...I'm *quite* happy that even our DT core doesn't have anything close to the population densities of some other major cities! :) |

Oh mississauga and all those cities that surround TO are not actually away from TO, there is no actual visible border i mean they literally all flow into one another, a suburb if you wish. BUT, when you go to Toronto the official sign says 2,500,000 people or something :) |

Agreed. And LaPlata is pretty far away from Buenos Aires. About 150 km I think.
But my guess is they are talking about population concentrations. Simply put, the majority of populations found in places such as Mississauga and Richmond Hill wouldnt exist without and are interconnected with Toronto as a major city. |

agglomeration means the center city and all of its suburb... so logically Mississauga would be included.
I found a map of the govt. recognized agglomeration of Montreal, you should find the same for Toronto.
I added a red dot to represent the downtown core. |

I have always thought of it this way. If there are people who live in a town or city work in a bigger town then i would count that as the metropolitan area. For example Toronto is pretty much developed right through to burlington and Hamilton but nobody would consider hamilton part of toronto because alot of the people work in Hamilton (and wouldnt drive to downtown Toronto. I think i heard the whole golden horseshoe are is more like 7 million. |

could be 8-9 million from way north TO with burlington,
miss, hamiltion etc etc... |
