ok, to compensate my participation in the "worst producers 2004" thread, here's my "best producers 2004" top 10
1. James Holden
His remixes of Avus - Fancy Arse, Nathan Fake - The Sky Was Pink and System 7 - Lost Planet were absolutelly spot on, while being very diverse. Plus he made Britney sound good, and prepares the release of Come To Me, a track that somehow isn't very popular, but that i absolutely love. He's still at the very top of the scene!
2. Pig & Dan
These guys did something absolutely unusual these days. Focused on quantity instead of quality... and were acclaimed! The reason is that the insane number of productions didn't necessarily decrease the quality, as it seems to happen to so many people. While they haven't released any particularly mindblowing track, the list of very good ones is large enough to get them into an high place in my chart.
3. Michael Burns
Probably the best newcomer of 2004? Well he had already released some Blue Haze stuff the previous year, but this year he became really well known to the scene, thanks to "North EP" which pleased the trance-heads, especially the explosive "Forwards". At the same time, he released quite a few remarkable proghouse tracks under the Blue Haze alias. To be honest i didn't really like his move at the end of the year with tracks featuring poppy vocals.
4. Luke Chable
Last year i was kinda starting to get bored of the Chable sound and didn't believe he'd keep on being one of the top prog producers, but i definitely was wrong. Loads of good stuff he released this year, i'll mention Lostep - Burma, Steve May - Open Day (rmx), Shpongle - Dorset Perception (rmx), Chable & Fernandez - Come To Me, Luke Chable - Melburn, and there's more.
5. Petter
The six songs EP was absolutely gold, probably the best two vinyls in my small collection, featuring the beautiful tracks "Modern Eternity" and "Left Turned". Add to that the breathtraking remix of Rouzbeh Delavari - Inner Structure and the bizarrely funky mix of Trafik - Echoes - he confirmed all of his talent this year.
6. Graham & Blades
Ok, they should be listed as separate guys, but they did some work together and this way i can get someone else into the top :p Re-appeared in 2004 with some of the most impressive tracks, future classics (?) such as Funky Summa, Space Manouvres Pt 3, Filth, plus the nice remix of Ryukyu Underground - Seragaki.
7. Nathan Fake
Before 2004, he was "the guy who did Outhouse". Now he's seen by everyone as a genious. What contributed to that was his ep on Saw Recordings, the mix of Perc - Closer and the lovely (ambient? downtempo?) track The Sky Was Pink.
8. Derek Howell
To be honest i didn't looked into this guy until very recently. But i was really impressed, he sure knows how to make great prog breaks. Highlights: remix of Smight - God Strikes Here, Alley Qats - Talk To Me Goose, Pinkbox Special - Nice Guys Finish Last and Might As Well Do This While I Still Can.
9. Sasha (and his team)
Involver. And the Cirque - Pokinoi mix!
10. Way Out West
Their album wasn't perfect, but it had some really great highlights, such as Killa, Apollo, and Chasing Rainbows. Enough to be one of the best. |

| Usually I have enough to add to this type of threads, but I really can't think of anyone really standing out this year. There definitely has been the odd good track, but almost all of them have been made by different producers, and I will not waste my vote on someone based on a single track. |

- Mylo
"Destroy Rock & Roll" was a very strong album and i enjoyed many of his remixes this year
- The Scumfrog
after delevering some very filthy and nice remixes to pop artists and also edm artists, scumfrog also releases his album "Simmer" and it rocks, and so does he.
- Eric Prydz
1/4 of the "swedish house mafia", and the person that has gotten the most attention, mostly due to a certain overplayed track, but anyhow. Eric showed what he was made of in 2003 with 3 stunning ep's and this year was as good as last year, with both rocking tracks and with a smashing remix of shapeshifters "lola's theme"

Indeed a pretty impressive track, but am I wrong or is this somewhat less dark than the usual stuff released on Saw? I recall that most of the stuff released on it was somewhat darker and more tribal (Bipath - Paranoize, Satoshi Tomiie - Virus, Creamer & K - Numb, etc.). Different direction for the label or just a single track differing somewhat from the rest of the releases?
Still a very good track, although the earlier releases like Paranoize appeal a lot more to me. Have to hear this somewhat more often, maybe I'll still buy it as I have been getting back into deeper and darker prog lately. |
