Hi, TAs! I need some help here with regards to shopping for external hard drives, USB Port variety.

I need your expertise in determining the right choice of buying a hard drive - I did some research and found out that a lot of hard drives fail. Preferrably for sale in Canada, where I am - less hassle and safer delivery.

I searched the web ,asked people EVERYwhere, and found out that the best external hard drive to buy is of SEAGATE brand (or do you suggest ... ). I need some suggestions, tips and other info, please - as I am going to purchase online, via TigerDirect or NCIX.com. Needed suggestions involve brands you trust/prefer, brands to avoid/bad, places online, prices, etc.

Your help is highly appreciated! :) :happy2:

Also: What the heck is "FIREWIRE" and why do I need it?
:nervous:

Firewire is (IEEE1394) a high speed data connection similar to USB, while theorhetically slower than USB 2.0 it provides fast reliable connections all the same, and has the ability to control the device it is connected to. You do not need it unless your device only supports it and not USB.

Check out cnet.com for some reviews.

Hamilton isn't that far from the border is it?

Could you nip over the border for a Western Digital USB 2.0 250 GB EXTERNAL HD for US$149 from Circuit City? Less than 60 cents per GB

Very much not so. Although, firewire 400 has been on the apple platform for some time now. there are PCs that come equipped with it as well. Now there is firewire 800 which is theoretically twice as fast transfer rates.

I have a Western Digital 120 GB External HD. Got it up and running in about 2.7346275628753 seconds, haven't had a single problem. I have it plugged into my firewire through my soundcard because I only have USB 1.0. It's still fast, and efficient. Western Digital make quality stuff.

Hi!
Firewire 2 is coming up, 1394b. Not sure of the speed though. Brief trhough google if you want info! Get yourself a 250gb from western digital, 3 years of warranty:) And buy something similar to an "icy box". Which you can ofcoursly make your own external hdd's. Works like plug & play :)

Enjoy
Cant get enough of illegal mp3's and divx :)

I am surprised to see Western Digital to get so many suggestions. I've surfed shopping websites and seen lots of complaints for that brand, as well as Maxtor and others ... Will look into it, maybe its better than SEAGATE, who knows ...
