The survey shows that reported use of alcohol, cannabis and other drugs has increased in Canada over the past decade--with alcohol and cannabis continuing to be the most commonly used drugs.
Fourteen percent of Canadians reported using cannabis in the past year, nearly double the rate reported in 1994 (7.4%).

The proportion of Canadians reporting any illicit drug use in their lifetime rose from 28.5% in 1994 to 45.0% in 2004, and in the past 12 months from 7.6% to 14.4%.
The past-year use of cannabis rose from 6.5% in 1989 to 7.4% in 1994, and to 14.1% in 2004. For cocaine and crack, rates declined from 1.4% in 1989 to 0.7% in 1994, and rose again to 1.9% in 2004. While past-year rates for the combined category of LSD/speed/heroin rose slightly from 0.4% in 1989, to 1.1% in 1994, and to 1.3% in 2004.
Rates of use for ecstasy were 2.9% (lifetime) and 0.8% (past 12 months) in the 2002 CCHS 1.2 (Tjepkema, 2004) in contrast to rates of use of 4.1% (lifetime) and 1.1% (past 12 months) in the 2004 CAS. |

| Interesting... and this is only in Canada. I'd love to find statistics which include the whole of North America and the whole of Europe. |

This is significant. 55% increase in lifetime drug use in the last decade...
Double the use of pot, coke, ecstasy. |

I just found some stats on Ireland itself... pretty shocking, we're a lot worse than Canada! I'll paste the link because it's a PDF but here are some of the ones i found interesting:
In Northern Ireland and Ireland:
- Highest prevalence rate for use of ecstasy in the last year is 3%
- Highest prevalence rate for use of cannabis in the last year is 8%
- Highest prevalence rate for use of cocaine in the last year is 2%
- Current prevalence of alcohol varies (across different boards) between 65% and 81%
In Ireland only:
- Apart from cannabis, highest levels of lifetime use were recorded for cocaine powder and magic mushrooms (6%), ecstasy, amphetamines and lsd (each 5%), poppers (4%), and solvents (2%).
- In the past year, ecstasy (3%) and cocaine (2%) were the main drugs reported other than cannabis.
- In the month prior to the survey, ecstasy (1%) was the most frequently reported illegal drug use apart from cannabis.

Doesn't really surprise me to be honest, cocaine is the new "chic" over here. Practically everyone i know has done a line at least once. |

because the people doing the surveying were all hammered.
Ireland is great, my 83 year old grandfather still drinks like a madman, he'll take down a glass of milk to coat his stomach, then chug a bottle of whiskey. My mom still thinks he can outdrink me at that age. |

Hahaha, yea a few of my uncles are like that. The frequency at which I drink beers to get hammered is 2-3 every hour for about 4 hours. They'll do more than that and drink like that all day if they want to. |
