PLEASE! Don't drink and drive!

You would think after being told a million times whilst growing up that drinking and driving is bad, people would be scared less to even try. Or at least have some common sense in their heads not to test it out.
Unfortunately, for a certain few morons out there, this is not the case.
One of my good friends was in an accident last weekend. She was driving the vehicle with both her parents in the car. A drunk man hit them, killed her mother, and severely injured both my friend and her father.
I have never seen someone so traumatized in my life. And why? Because some thought it would be better to drive home after drinking, than to sleep somewhere, or call a cab/friend/parent.
I am infuriated by people's ignorance. Even though you may think you can control yourself, it doesn't always mean you can. I have seen far too many people get behind the wheel of a vehicle after drinking, and it just out right disgusts me. I have no respect for anyone who will be incredibly stupid enough to drive while drunk.
I am pleading to all of you to make the right decision. Trust me, I have been drunk enough times to know that it may feel "OK" to drive, but don't take the chance with your life, other people's lives, or if your lucky, a ticket and your license revoked.
I do not know what happened to the other driver that night, but I can imagine that he and his family are in terrible pain and suffering either way. If he is still alive, he will be charged with man-slaughter, and may go to jail, and well.. if he isn't alive, it's because he had one too many that night and made a bad move.
Don't be that guy! You are NOT invincible. You may think "that wouldn't happen to me", or "I have driven drunk many times and I have been fine", but why take the chance? The people it DOES happen to think the very same things.
Sleep in your car, call a cab/parent/friend to pick you up, take a bus, sleep over at a friend's house. It may cause an inconvenience, but an inconvenience is a small price to pay to be alive. You can't be inconvenienced when you're six feet under, and you can't be going out and having a drunken ole time locked behind metal bars.
If you see a friend leaving a party or a bar, and you don't think they can drive, take their keys, or offer them a ride. If you are asked to get in a car with a drunk behind the wheel, turn the ride down!
Life is far too precious to be tossing it up in the air, and hoping to catch it on the way down.
P.S. I am sure that if you called the local police station and said that you were too drunk to get home, and you have no transportation, they would be happy to drop you off. Like I said, may cause an inconvenience, but better safe than sorry! |

As much as that's true, people will never stop drinking. It is better to embrace the truth and help the consequences than try to deny it all together.
P.S. It seems I am very philosophical this evening. |

That's too bad.
Add to this the list: Don't go without sleep and drive. I did this not too long ago and its just as bad, but I didn't hurt anyone or damage property.
My sister plowed into the rear of a semi-truck b/c she fell asleep, destroying her car but escaping without an injury.
My cousin crashed into a telephone pole and ruptured his innards (well, some squishy thing inside his belly) but he's fine now. |

Good point. Perhaps I should revise my point and say don't drive when you are intoxicated on substance, or when sleep deprived.
Millions of people die from car accidents every year. Vehicles are huge killers, and we need to stop taking it for granted and be more careful!
Thank you to those for the condolences. My friend's mother's passing hasn't affected me as much as seeing the aftermath on my friend. She is in rough shape. What could be worse than seeing your mother die? |

You are entitled to nothing in this world. Nothing is guaranteed and nothing is certain - all we can do, and all we can inevitably be the victims of, are our own choices. It's unfortunate that we must sometimes become the victims of others choices, and that some must pay a very heavy price to prove those choices wrong, but there is no escaping it just as there is no escaping these lives we lead. All you can do is embrace life while you have it - cherish the little moments and cherish the time that you have with those whom you love, for you are not entitled to life moments from now and you are not entitled exemption from other peoples choices. Make your choices - choose to live, and choose to live safely.
Ask yourself each day: if I were to die at this moment, would I be content with the life I have lead? Choose to answer 'yes'. |

Hi Theresa. I'm really sorry to hear about your friend's accident and the loss of her mother. :( I hope that her and her father will recover from this with no lasting effects from the accident other than the obvious mental/emotional scars that will never heal.
I've been hit by four drunk drivers over the years. The last one was just last Saturday night. Last weekend my friend was also involved in an accident and even though she didn't cause the accident she was still arrested because she had been drinking.
I've had two friends die from drunk driving, three killed by drunk drivers, and one friend kill someone due to drunk driving. People think they have things all under control when they really don't have a clue.
Last week I almost created a thread about something just as serious as this, but I decided against it. I think I'm going to write mine tomorrow. I definitely think people need to wake up to the world around them.
BTW...I quit drinking in April 2003. :thepirate |
