Using sampled sounds

Hi guys! I hope someone could enlighten me on something here.. I have tried to search around for a topic about this, but I was unable to find any, so I had to make a new topic on it.
What I'm wondering about is if it's possible to use a sampled sound as somekind of soundfont. Maybe this is an unfortunate description, but I would like to use a sampled virus lead sound - like I was using a synth. Say I have a 8th note, but I would like to use that sound for a whole bar. Is there a way of doing this?
I'm not planning on ripping sounds or anything - lol - it's just a teqhnical question I've been wondering about for quite some time now.

Thaks in advance!
hey cheggy
You can extend samples by creating loop points in a program like sound forge, however I think you might run into problem extending a sample that is as short as a 1/8th note as there is not enough length in the wave to find a suitable loop point. With longer samples, sure, you can extend the sound without the need to use time stretching so that you can load it into a sampler for longer play, but I think that a 1/8th note is too short to get anything decent out of.
