Hmmm, interesting argument, but lets be fair. TOTA's on general do appreciate and recognize the talents of our cities residents. Do we gush and rave about them all the time ? No, of course not, but then that's only natural. If you club regularly, then seeing Mark Oliver or Sean Miller or Evil P doesn't hold as much excitement as say, PVD or Adam Freeland or Preach (a resident from another city). Does this mean we think TO residents are any less talented ? Hell no. But if you seriously expect people to heap praise on their residents week in week out, then you're not looking for clubbers, you're looking for club/dj groupies.

I've read positive comments about almost every resident (and non resident) DJ in toronto. I don't think anyone forgets the contributions these talented individuals put in, week in, week out. That being said, when international DJ's are brought in, they do deserve to have the spotlight on them. The same way that i would expect Mark Oliver to have the spot light on him if he went to Montreal, or Deko-ze to have the spot light on him when he spins in BC.

Resident DJ's are the reason why clubs are successfull, because the crowd knows no matter who the guest DJ is, the regular will always throw down a set that is indicative of the clubs particular sound. That's why i don't think residents and guest dj's should mind having one another around, because in fact they both contribute to maintaining a healthy club atmosphere. Guests keep the scene fresh, and the residents on their toe's. Whereas the residents know their clubs crowd better and help setup the stage where the guest can step in and give the crowd something they haven't heard.

Both parts are vital, and both parts are appreciated by the knowledgable clubber.

I always try to post something about the opener/ closer. Its only fair, and they are deserving of it. Sometimes they're just as good, if not better than the main act.

I'm not saying MO isn't good, just that he doesn't need reviews when he's already got a captive audience of several hundred people at least two nights of the week!

Several hundred? Understatement of the year. lol. I see your point Diginut, but there's nothing wrong with posting a review praising a local DJ, week after week. This board isn't exclusively viewed by 'old skooler' TOTA's- there are new memebers joining every day, and lurkers from all parts of the earth. Why shouldn't they find out about our own local talent?

As for posting reviews about weekly resident night parties, I don't see anything wrong with that. I agree with Sarah- people on tribe post reviews for loads of resident nights & small parties all the time. By doing so, it could possibly encourage people to try something different if they keep hearing all these good things about this resident DJ or that little club. And maybe, just MAYBE, one of these 'locals' will become the next Tiesto.... If Tiesto, or any fill-in-international-DJ-name-here, had a resident weekly event in their native country or say Ibiza over the summer, would they not be worthy of reviews any more?

Man, I was trying to keep that pimping on the down low, and here you are blowing me all out in public...

And dude, where did you come up with that war statement? How cool are you...?

I find it interesting when i read all the reviews how much the local DJs dont even get a mention. Some people include them but many times they are omitted. Whether it's sean miller at boa, mark oliver at guv or anywhere else that brings in an international guest i never really get an idea as to how the local dj played. Whether you liked it or hated it, we want to know.

You want to know how to support local talent? Give it even half the hype that goes into the international guys and you'll be doing your share.

What's in it for you? Do you complain about ticket prices? Local DJs dont have to be flown in, limoed around, and put in 5 star hotels. They also usually respect their hometown enough to ask for a reasonable rate even when they do become international. In my opinion, there are several DJs in Toronto that meet or far exceed what we pay 10s of thousand of dollars to import. Time to start supporting them more.

Mark Oliver's talent goes without saying. ;) ;) ;) ;)

Marc Oliver owns the dance floor! Every time i go to the Guv, i have a great time while he is spinnin. :happy2: He is one of the reasons y i got to the guv, i mean, after some good international talent i can always relly on MO to keep the energy up and keep me dancing all night.

Hes da man!

I agree man... Mark Oliver is the reason why I will n close guvernment... bc after the int'l dj leaves at 3 or 4 or 6 or whenever, u just KNOW mark oliver is gonna keep that energy flowing and just pump the outta the crowd till he decides to leave teh decks around 7 or 8...

Its Mark that keeps me there till the end! That's all mark!

I didn't even bother to review JZ - that is not why I went.

I have to add that it's pretty shameful that someone would get flamed for posting a thread asking for people to support their local DJ talent. No wonder the scene here is deteriorating so much.

Shame on you.

That's a red herring if I've ever heard one. Shame us all you want but your appeal to emotion adds absolutely no validity to your argument.

And I'm not going to respond to your post dissecting mine into a thousand pieces. I've got no problem reading and responding to long replies, but at least consolidate your points into paragraphs, because that thing is brutal on the eyes.

Nat, you're right, there's nothing *wrong* with posting a review of a resident night. All I'm saying is that Jay can suck on my left nut for trying to shame us into praising the residents when they aren't who we went to see. If I went to see Mark Oliver or Kenny Glasgow or Sean Miller and the party was off the hook then sure, maybe I'll post something, but trying to guilt us all into wasting time in our reviews trying to remember the intricate details of sets that half of us weren't even really paying attention to? Give me a break.

Remember that I've gone out with a lot of you to resident nights - at Boa, at Viva, and even at the Guvernment, once upon a time. I've spent more time and money supporting the local scene than many or most people on this forum - I still think this thread isn't worth the precious data bytes it's taking up.
