High end earbuds (Shure E series, Etymotic ER series)

I'm considering getting some nice quality earbuds. I like my Apple in-ear headphones but they keep breaking and the sound quality isn't great.

So far I've just looked at Shure and Etymotic models. Does anyone have any experience with either?

Specifically I'm wondering if the Shure E3 is worth the extra price over the E2. And how does the Etymotic ER-6 compare to the Shure models? Unfortunately the Etymotic ER-4 ($340) and Shure E5 ($500) are probably out of my price range.

These are the lowest prices I've found so far (in US stores, without tax/shipping):

Shure E2: $65 (buy.com/compuplus.com)
Etymotic ER-6: $100 (buy.com)
Shure E3: $130 (buy.com/compuplus.com)

Etymotic ER-4: $220 (eektechnology.com)
Shure E5: $370 (compuplus.com)

Right now I'm leaning towards the ER-6 or E3. They're close enough in price, anyone opinions on which is better or anything?

Well if you're willing to shell out big bucks for a quality piece of headphone then go with the ER-6 or E3.

I don't have any experience with those kind of earbud headphone so i'm not really sure. I would say go for cheap because they still get the job done. I guess it depends on what you would be using it for as well (Obviously listening to music..) but some people just like having a clean and sharp sound and other people (like myself) dont really care about quality, just as long the headphones play the music.

I'd obviously be listening to music, but I'm also starting to DJ and produce, so I imagine the high end model would definitely be good for monitoring in production (and possibly DJing?)

i would say you are crazy for DJing with earbuds, but i am not a dj so who am i to talk.

no you're right Grant, i wouldnt use earbuds for DJing and producing either..

I dunno if you want to start producing and DJing than i would recommend a more conventional cup shaped headphone to cover your entire ear...

but if the earbud works for you, then more power to ya.

e3's are great.

My review on them from Jun-16-04: http://www.tranceaddict.com/forums/...threadid=189300

I think Adam Freeland uses in ear headphones for DJing, so if your planning to do the same then the more expensive ones would probably be better. I'd still rather have the bigger headphones though for DJing.

Well, I already have Sony MDR-V700DJs (which I need to fix at the moment), but my friend uses an earbud for DJing and he says it works great. Also, as far as producing goes, I've heard these are studio reference quality. In one review someone said the E3 sounds as good as a $30,000 speaker system....
