Smoking rooms will be the next casualty

The slippery slope continues to slide. Now that clubs were forced to spend tens and in some cases hundreds of thousands of dollars on smoking rooms the province is about to ban them. Where is the democracy? Are these rooms not a good comprimise? Smokers have a place to go and non smokers dont have to breathe it. Where is the democracy? Who is going to pay for all the useless renovations? I'm sorry but this is completely pathetic. If this province were really concerned about health they would relist eye exams and chiropractic services .
And don't even get me started on the fact that they are forcing stores to hide them. What a draconian time we live in.
quote: | Smoking isn’t a four letter word. But the Liberals at Queen’s Park are treating it like one.
They’ve introduced new legislation designed to not only discourage the use of the butt, but to make it harder to find a place to light up. The legislation aims to create a 100 percent, unbreakable ban on smoking in public places and work spaces - including casinos and private nightclubs - within the next two years.
Cigarettes are already banned in many buildings, as well as bars and restaurants. And soon you won’t even be able to see the butts you want to buy if the law goes through – they’ll have to be hidden out of view in convenience stores, so they don’t influence young teens thinking about taking up the habit.
Health Minister George Smitherman admits he’s tolerant of cigarette users, but the Liberals made a vow to crackdown on the health hazard of others breathing in the fumes.
And they’re keeping it.
“I went to a bar, and what I might have called a hangover and blamed on alcohol, was often as not from second hand smoke,” he explains.
Another part of the strategy is to convince kids smoking is “stupid”, using new commercials to hammer the point home. They’re also planning a series of free concerts in various cities, with the first being held Friday evening at Toronto’s York Event Theatre.
Will it work? Most don’t think so. “My friends don’t watch that stuff," laughs contractor Terry Beaton. “We just kind of smoke and enjoy it.”
Consultant Gabriel Dravon agrees. “I don’t think it’s going to work,” he predicts. “Will what will? I don’t know.”
The legislation will be amongst the toughest anti-smoking measures in the world.

PS: this article doesnt specify DSRs but this legislation does include them in the ban. |

Just because they are trying to ban all smoking in public places, doesn't mean they will. |

Sorry Jay- I just cant agree with you here, since I hate smoking. I feel sorry for those who are addicted to it and are being 'criminalized' for it, but they should really make an effort to quit. Personally, I wouldn't wanna support an industry (tobacco) that's made me an addict, lines their pockets with money, and lines my lungs with tar and cancer.
I can't wait for those smoking rooms to disappear. Not like I enter many of them, but passing through the lounge at Boa was one of the most disgusting 2 mins of my life. There's not a drop of fresh air in there. The room is absorbed with the stale, overconcentrated smell of smoke. I don't know how a smoker can even tolerate it- the rooms alone have to be harmful to your health. U don't even need to smoke in there- just inhale, and u got a weeks worth of nicotine. I came home smelling like an ashtray as a result of that walk-through.
And the patio at the Guv... even tho its open-air, still no fresh air in sight for those who are looking for it. |

its just a matter of time before smoking becomes completely banned.
there's less and less smokers, even among young people.
and the people who do smoke, for the most, want to quit or already try doing so. |

I just wanna re-iterate that I think it would be better for them to smoke outside, rather than in an enclosed room (but then they should be responsible for their butt disposal). Those rooms reek!! |

Now, what's wrong with banning smoking rooms? I dunno how people can stand to be more than 2 minutes in one of those anyway... lethal, I tell ya.
BAN THEM ALL! |

Ban all drinking rooms next...
i don't trust those damn drunks behind the wheel of a car whilst i'm walkin...
come to think of it, i don't trust those damn drunks when they're walking on the streets either...they have a tendancy to barf all over the nice clean sidewalk.
Ban smoking first, then drinking, then playing your music too loud when you're crusing down the street...
it's time to live in a completely regulated society, cause 'we' obviously don't know how to live our life, and need the government to look after us. |

remember people, they arent bannin smoking itself, just the venue in which you do it. And nobody said you dont know how to live your life; the fact is, people do not know how to live without harming others. they dont care if you harm yourself, just leave other people alone. |

So how does this argument apply to other activities that have a dangerous sideeffect to society. I mean, ok, you're not banning smoking -- just banning where people smoke. What about banning drinking in public places, because the argument can be made that when people drink, they have a tendancy to lose control, make wrong descions, get behind the wheel of a car, run someone over...say their sorry in court.
Once you let the government start to arbitrate what's in societies best interest, it's only a matter of time till they begin to take away some of the rights you actually do care about. |
