This is pretty interesting for all the Bush-bashers and anti-Americans who think that we can have people like Parrish mouth off in public and on National TV because Americans are too stuck-up to care what we think. Obviously, they do listen, they do care, and they're getting a tad pissed off.
Even the pro-Canadian debaters say "we need each other" - not "we [Canadians] don't need those [American] bastards". Whether or not you believe that the USA needs us just as much as we need them, there is at the very least some level of interdependence that we shouldn't ignore, and we should be doing everything we can to keep relations healthy. Not flaunting our "sovereignity" á là Paul Martin - yes, the Americans *know* we are sovereign, that's why they ASKED FOR SUPPORT. If you're a 110-pound shrimp and a 300-pound bodybuilder offers to be your bodyguard if you buy him a cheeseburger for $2.50, you accept!
Some of the comments on there are a little extreme, obviously, but they're not outright false either. The Fox woman's comments are clearly tongue-in-cheek - as a general rule though, Canadians would be wise to listen carefully to what the Americans are saying rather than dismissing them with a snicker and a roll of the eyes (or a barrage of hateful political rhetoric). |

It's fine reasserting our sovereignity (not yelling about it 24/7 though) however you're making quite a huge assumption thinking that the us is a credible "bodyguard". At least I think so. Mostly because what good is bodyguard that is provoking other countries by putting a missle defence sheild in the name of protection? It's creating another arms race no? Look at russia developing another new type of nuke or China. A bodyguard does not provoke and stir the pot in the name of "justice". Equilibrium is needed to stablize the world, NOT complete and utter rule with only one or more like minded powers, that leads to rebellion and uprising imo. |

How is it "provoking" when there have already been several ground attacks on the USA, one air attack, and various countries previously involved in those attacks are now known to be developing missile programs?
These people hate the entire Western world. Canadians may feel that they are immune to this because of their self-cited moral superiority, but I can assure you that the people who would like to get rid of America once and for all do not see it that way.
Any defense measure can be interpreted as "stirring the pot" if you ignore where the offense is coming from. If you want to make the right decision, you have to look at all the information and not just the cut-section that falls into line with your own emotions. |

good objective post, i as a an american am impressed...and tho i dont agree with alot my government does pertaining to foriegn policy and diplomacy, or am i blindly patriotic. i do feel it would be in canadas best interest to not alienate the US, as some other shortsighted europeon countries have, ie, france(do they remember WW2, the marshall plan? they exist because of us)..i just believe people need to put personal politcal views aside and realize the US doesnt have some insidious plan for worldwide domination, but we will stop at nothing to protect ourselves, and whether you like it or not the safer we are, the safer you are..hey we are all humans inhabiting the same planet, so lets make the best of it on a personal level, and not hate our neighbors indifferently..i am coming to toronto for tiesto and cant wait to party with some of you canucks, i had a blast at KH and guv for the labour of love, you guys know how to throw a party...but miami is way warmer, and i just layed out in 80 degree heat today, it was great, hope that doesnt make you jealous, peace out totas, see you at tiesto, with a tan!!!:eyespop: |
