The Great Estonian Transfer Scam

I’m embarrassed to report I was hood winked yesterday by the Great Estonian Transfer Scam. The good news is I didn’t lose my money and I learned a valuable lesson. Here’s how this scam works so you can avoid it.

Part I

1. The scammer posts an advertisement on the Internet promising a ‘free’ pda to anyone with a paypal account.

2. Sucker A responds to the ad and asks how to collect his ‘free’ pda.

3. The scammer explains that the pda will be sent shortly, all he asks in return is that you help transfer money for him. Since paypal isn’t offered in Estonia he needs someone to accept payments from his customers into your paypal account and then wire the funds to his company via Western Union (the essential institution to every intraweb scam). Sounds simple enough with no risk to you right? Think again.

Now that he has the paypal account information from Sucker A he can proceed to duping Sucker B (that where I come in).

Part II

1. The scammer creates an ebay account and builds up his rating buying small items from his partner or from himself disguised as one of his many ebay alias accounts.

2. Now the scammer lists an expensive high demand item to sell on ebay, in this case a digital camera. He uses the paypal account name from sucker A and explains in the listing he needs 4 days to ship the item.

3. Sucker B comes a long sees a good deal from an ebay seller with outstanding feedback history of over 25 transactions. He buys the item and unknowingly sends payment to Sucker A’s paypal account.

4. Sucker A is surprised to find that a large amount of money has been deposited to his paypal account just as the scammer promised. Hey maybe this scammer isn’t all bad after all! Luckily Sucker A got suspicious called me and asked what was going on.

5. If sucker A was stupid enough to wire the money to the scammer he would never receive a pda. Sucker B (me) wouldn’t receive my camera and I would be trying to get ebay or paypal to recover my stolen money from either the scammer (who’s long gone) or from Sucker A (who’s account I sent the payment to). Meanwhile the scammer is counting his easy money and planning his next scam on another unsuspecting Sucker.

ok i just breezed through that and it seemed all you did was to buy something on ebay. Why would you be a sucker? And how would you know the seller was a fraud anyways?

You're right it wouldn't be obvious to most it was a fraud. I was referring to myself as a 'sucker' because I was the one being defrauded. The first guy was the real sucker for giving his paypal account info to someone claiming to provide him with a 'free' pda.

However, I was a partly to blame for not carefully examining his history. When I reexamined his transactions I realized they were all small buys. My brother said this is a red flag. Selling history is more important than purchases.

Btw here is the criminal's ebay account:
