How did YOU start getting gigs?

I know this has been done before, but wasn't really able to find anything too helpful in search.

So anyways, basically I'm at the point where I really want to be getting out there doing gigs etc. Me and some other local DJ's will sometimes throw little house parties but nothing too big. So basically what i'm looking for is some help.

How did YOU get your name out there and get that groundbreaking start that propelled you toward more and more gigs?

believe it or not i sent a demo to the local radio station (which infact plays mostly rock/hiphop) and they said i could do a 'techno' show for 2 hours. not bad huh? (i posted about this in the CHill OUt Room awhile back). I did that 2 hour thing for 5 weekends, and people here got an good idea who i am and what i do. Only thing is, my uncle (who is a big dj in san antonio) gave me some advice that really came in handy... Since he told me that people who aren't familiar with "trance" as we know it, would just change the station, he said to mix in the music i like with music the people are familiar with (sandstorm, castles in the sky, heavan) cheese like that. i got alot of positive feedback in my email which was pretty cool, and since then i have dj'ed at 10 parties and counting.

ok the end.

bye.

I (as well as my brother a few years later) built a following in college and the people that we knew pushed for us at some of the clubs. After that, it was just promotion and spinning anywhere that would take you.

I dont spin too often right now, but I know how it is done here... a lot of it is going out, repeatedly and showing up at the clubs when you are not spinning, build a good rep w/ the promoter and keep talking w/ them. If you pester them enough, and have a few good demos, your chances of getting an opening slot are pretty good. The rest is up to you.

I spun my first real party this past weekend. I was at the club and was talkin to some guy, mentioned that i was a DJ, and he called me last week to spin a party he was having. I did a 2 hour set for about 100 people, it was great. we'll see what happens from here....

back in detroit I knew a dj with gigs and he would get me to open.

here in detroit I went to a local weekly house event at a bar and started talking to the promoter every week. He got me in there and form the people I met there I got a few more.

I also started talking to the djs at teh big places too. they recognize me from the crowd rockin out and I mention that I spin so, now all I need to do is drop a dmeo off.....but im kinda lazy/busy. :wtf:

Most of my gigs come through going out and meeting people. I prefer not to send mix CD's out blindly; once I've met someone who might be interested in booking me, then I send them a mix.

Each time I play a gig, I try to at least get a lead for a booking for another gig although this doesn't always happen. :p The best ones are when you play a set and then straight after, someone comes up to you and says "that was great - I'd like you to play for my promotion" ....but that doesn't always happen either. :p

got my first party gig from a promoter i know and spun with for fun.

IMHO, too many retards, egomaniacs and immature folk in the club scene, i'd rather spin at my pad with good friends... or stream to random netfolk.

i dont need the money. i have a nice dayjob :D

I whore myself.

no really... I just kept sending out demos, talking to people and once people heard me for the first time word kept spreading and blah, blah, blah.

its mostly who know.......I mean lets face the facts.....i don't care how good u r ...if u don't know anyone to maybe get a slot opening or closing and your not gonna bring mad heads to club....why would a club or promoter book u?

maybe you'll get a promoter/owner once in a rare time who really loves the way u spin and wants to bring u in.....possible but rare...

you have to get your name out in the trance scene by whatever means u have available to u.....burn a 1000 discs and stand outside at closing of an armin /PVD event and give'm out...get your sets on the net...crap like that.....its all about building the name

I really believe if its meant for u doors will open quite easily......

my doors have been bolted shut for years!!!!!!!!!!1:D

I used to promote so I knew a few promoters... it was just a matter of sending them a mix and waiting until they needed me.

i gave my shot at finding gigs in nyc, but i realized it really is about who u know. and even when you know people, its still not easy.

one other thing i realized, most promoters are complete bastards.
