I would say Oakenfold helped pioneer "good electronic dance music" more than anything else, and he wasnt alone, but he did do alot.

That "baleric sound" ended up being Acid House. Oakenfold was one of the least important of those "other three". Oakenfold hasn't pioneered good electronic dance music since '94.

Hardly. While I'm not defending Tiesto, Markus has made music more mainstream then anybody...look at GDJB and Party 93.1.

please tell me you are joking.

Respect to Markus but..eh that statement is even to big for him.

i dunno why some of you get so bent over nothing, i'm not even gonna quote who said what, but as my post originally suggested paul oakenfold is the father of what currently is known as trance, i'm not asking about acid house, house, techno, or any of that other crap

and markus schulz is not involved in this one, stick to the topic

from what i can gather - oakenfold discovered tiesto,
oakenfold while not being the greatest dj in the world, at least has some variance in his sets
oakenfold pulls teh mad god poses

Oakenfold.

Without him, trance would be just an experimental genre. However, Tiesto did help in bringing trance mainstream, which is a good idea, IMO.

Oakenfold would have to be my pick. I suppose he is the reason why many of us inlcuding myself are trance fans today. His groundbraking mix album "Tranceport" gave trance and non-trance fans a unique experience. He really exposed the beginings of the genre in the late 80's and early 90's to many. His unique ability to blend the early sounds of New Yorks underground dance scene and the balleric sounds of Ibiza gave us the unique trance sound itself. His lablel continued to pioneer that sound in 1991. Although, I agree that he was never a top notch mixer,he still gave many others that we listen to and praise today thier start.Clearly he has gone off the charts for a while now, providing fans with crappy performances and live sets within the last few years. But still, he is in my opinion the "father of Trance."

If I were to compare their best albums (imo) Tranceport v. Magik 6 I would give it to tiesto because the mixing is better. Very close call though

Oakenfold by far. After the Goa EM in 1994 or 1996, no one couldnt help but notice. If you dont have this set, you must get it. Oakenfold brought a "euphoric" vibe to Ibiza and set the stage of dance music in Ibiza. Truely legendary EM sets from 1999 made trance the most memorable year ever.

Tiesto started out banging out Hardcore tunes. Yes you heard correct. Tiesto then saw a techno legend Sven Vath and changed his style. Tiesto broke into the scene in 1998 with his innercity appearance.

Oakenfold has done so much for this scene in general; however, he's not purely electronic. He's played drum and bass, goa, trance and maybe other styles i dont know about. Hes done remixes in the 80's before i was born and he's truely legendary.

Not to be overlooked, tiesto will be a legend in the books once his time is over, but not yet. Tiesto has probably brought some new people into the electronic music scene and has done a lot for the music. Not to count out tiesto, because he's still great and he started spinning the year i was born ;)

On a total accumulated contribution to dance music, Oakenfold wins hands down.

Currently popularity and effort he loses though.
