Quick question about scrolling through long files on an Ipod

Hi everyone. I'm thinking of buying a 40gb ipod tomorrow. Just wanted to know how easy is it to scroll through long mp3 files. Say, for example you have a 3 hr set and want to scroll to half way through. How long does it take using the scroll wheel?
Also, how well does it display id3v2 tags? Let's say for example, I have a file like this:
Artist: Armin van Buuren
Title: A State Of Trance Episode 177 - 02.12.04 - Part 1 - The Newest Tunes Selected
Will I be able to see all of that title on the ipod? How about when I'm trying to select which mp3 to listen to - how much of that would fit onto the screen? |

| scrolling to any point in time in the liveset is very easy and quick, however it only reads ID3 tags so after a certain number of characters the text will get truncated - kinda annoying I have found. |

the click wheel makes scrolling easy as mentioned.
as for idtags, itunes will shorten them, but u can edit them to desired length regardless. |

This is roughly what it would look like, but in your instance you can edit it to show what you wish via iTunes. It will scroll title - artist - album respectivly from top to bottom.
It would look something like this:
Newest Tunes Selected
Armin Van Buuren
ASOT 177
You could put what ever you want for the name via iTunes, but that is how I have it. Fairly simple and very well laid out. |

Thanks for your help everybody. I went to a friend's house last night and tried out a 4th gen ipod and it was incredibly easy scrolling through the list of songs. It read the complete id3v2 tag natively, which was also good. Unfortunately, he said that there was no way of skipping through the song using the scrollwheel (it controls volume). This meant it took about 30 seconds to get 5 minutes into a set.
Does anyone know if you can somehow assign the scrollwheel so that it skips through the mp3, rather than controlling volume?
I'm going to go have a look at a Sony Network Walkman HD-1. Doesn't support mp3 natively ($20 in-shop firmware upgrade should be available in next couple of weeks) which is a big negative, although I don't mind converting my mp3z overnight. Also isn't very loud. Totally destroys the ipod on battery life, is substantially smaller. If this thing scrolls through long songs quickly, I think I'll get it.
Anyone know much about the JetAudio iAudio M3? |

^iAudio is far better, but no LCD on the unit itself. thats the ONLY drawback. They claim up to 30 hours on a charge, but its gonna be like 24 in reality, still thats TWICE as good as apples 12 hour battery life (claimed, and its a lie) and 10 hours better than the CLAIMED 15 from the photo ipod.
As for scrolling, click the circle in the middle when playing a song in this screen:

once that happens ull see a triangle appear in the time length bar. scrolling around will allow u to access a track at 15 min. or 46 minutes.
ONE LAST THING:
SONY NW-HD3 !!!!
Its new, and will be released in north america soon, it FULLY SUPPORTS MP3, read here:

its got a 6 band equalizer too. also, i would imagine that by pressing pause and then fast forward, go much faster then pressing fast forward and holding for a minute. My MD does, i dont see why the HD3 cant.
Id get it, immediately, but rumour has it, that sony is releasing new HiMDs with 2gb discs :) |

I went into the Sony store today and checked ou the NW-HD1. Peronally, I thought the interfaced was rotten and you couldn't skip around songs quickly at all. Oh, an no playlists - just a crappy "favourites" which contains 100 songs.
That being said, I decided to get an ipod mini mainly cause of physical size. I don't need any more than 4gb, as all my mp3z are on my computer. For me an mp3 player isn't a storage device, it's something that you put new music onto that you want to listen to. The ipod mini serves that function very well. |
