War of the worlds, Has been around for a very long time, It was first written as a book, I think in the 19th century, Then sometime around the 30s or 40s, They made a radio play which caused a lot of controversy around the country, People thought there was an alien invasion, Then I think around the 50s or 60s, the first feature film based on it was made, After that, Around the 90s, They made it into a TV series that took place a decade or two after the first film, And now in 2005, we have a remake, Which I hope will be twice as better, Even though theres been several alien invasion films, Such as Independence Day and Mars Attacks, I hope they do a whole lot better on this one. |
yeah that radio broadcast is quite famous, he told the story as a news announcement, and people thought they were actually being invaded by aliens (americans btw) and some of the soft bastards killed themselves. |

I watched that trailer about an hour ago and was completely blown away. Teasers this good piss me off, because now we have to wait 7 months before we can see this kick-ass-looking movie.

Its kind of funny how films can be wrapped up in 2 weeks or less (initial filming) and then spend half a year getting all the effects and images to look right. |
Very true. Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow only took 18 days to film, but then took about a year to produce all of the special effect. |

well after lotr i think hollywood thinks it would be a good idea to make epic films into numerous parts |
See I can understand if the novel or literature they're basing the film off of has numerous parts.
LOTR was three whole sections (the Fellowship, the Two Towers, The Return of the King... not to mention the Hobbit)
They can take Pride & Prejudice and make just 1 movie
They can take Much Ado About Nothing and make just 1 movie
They can take The Odyssey and make just 1 movie.
eh, I just don't get what so special about War of the Worlds to make it 3 epic parts... Oh well thats just me..

Yep, Oct 30, 1938. Orson Welles and his Mercury Street Players. I have the original radio broadcast on CD. We studied this broadcast in my Media Effects class. This guy in New Jersey thought a water tower was an Martian Death Ray and he shot at it with his shotgun! |

ye ive got it on tape somewhere, and as for the 3 part thing its prob so they can make more money!. but i need to confirm it first i only heard it from one 'source' lol |

Oh yeah absolutely, that would be the ONLY reason to make 3 parts out of it. Plus all the secondary channels of marketing (Toys, games, happy meal stuff)
its going to be big! |

The radio broadcast was amazing.
If you ever get to hear the original broadcast (I'm sure it's online somewhere), imagine yourself in the 40's.
First of all, there weren't any trailers - or commercials for it - they just aired it, as if to interrupt normally scheduled programming...
It had people totally convinced...
Could you imagine!!!
The only thing that could come close these days, would be if someone was able to pull off an elaborate Internet-based conspiracy/story.
Did anyone ever follow the A.I. Internet sory based on the character Jeanine Salla? (Please somebody remember this)...
Microsoft planted a "seed" in the A.I. trailer about "Jeanine Salla"... and it led to a massive underground game, funded by Steven Speilberg, and run by Microsoft... try this link, and dig around a bit..

It was weird... phone numbers on websites worked - you would even get call backs. It's hard to explain unless you played it... these guys banded together, and solved the puzzle..

I wish someone would fund something like that again.. it was incredible...

Yeh, I remember that. Imagine today, over the TV/Radio, without anybody knowning it was just an advertisment, the mass-hysteria it would cause? |

remake remake remake.
When will Hollywood start developing new and quality ideas again rather than relying on remade movies and movies made from books? (and lets not forget, lets not forget dude, historical movies based little on history and more on American love of action and special effects...) |
