Add a vaccum.;)
It makes it weightless ie "lighter" but the mass stays the same.

I guess i should have stated that I'm assuming that your completely submerging the object, not just dropping it in.
trancechaos
since water has maximim density at 4 degrees you could add heat to decrease the density of the water.

i guess that wouldnt work either since the mass wouldnt change and thus the weight would remain the same.
Tordan
You could add a colony of termites to the barrel. At first it'll go over 100kg but with time they'll eat away at the wood making the barrel lighter.

lol good answer!

some ppl are saying add something thats less dense than water..but ice is less dense, so that should work, no?

j_spot
Ice would make it bouyant in water, but thats not the question.
dallastar
add a pale light coloured dye to make it "lighter" in colour... not nessesarily volume!

that or a whole works for me too, but that is already a guess!~

ciao
