Psytrance vs. Goa

Okay, despite the fact that I've been listening to psytrance/goa for over 2 years, and that I've even patched together a couple sets of said music using Soundforge Acid, the difference between the 2 genres still seems to elude me. One description may be that goa is the generally older stuff with more definite melodies and warped basslines (ie. astral projection, koxbox, man with no name, hallucinogen, etc) whereas psytrance is the generally newer stuff that seems to be somewhat more minimal.... basically trance with weird fx/synths and no definable melody (ie. etnica, deviant electronics, infected mushroom, and so forth)
By that definite, I like goa *alot* better... the psytrance stuff I rate as slighty higher than techno :)
Anyone have a better idea of what the difference is?
Or is this actually a genre discussion that people can agree on? :)

(BTW, whats everyone's favorite goa/psytrance artist or song? My fav artist is astral projection... fav song of the moment is Chi A.D. - Astral Warrior) |

You have a fairly good idea, but since you asked for a definition, here goes ...
the way I see it (and the way I've been told on a few occasions), goa is a sub-genre of psychadelic (or psy) trance. These two styles are quite similar and *can* be used interchangeably when talking to somebody who isn't into psytrance that much. Yet there is a slight difference:
Goa is a very "busy" style, with a lot going on at any point of the track. You would find very complex melodies and layered synth lines and drum loops. Also, eastern influences are often found in a lot of goa tracks. Astral Projection would be a fairly decent and well-known artists that produce goa.
Yet not all psy-trance is busy and melodic as goa, there is many tracks and producers that make psy-trance that would border to techno rahter than to trance - lacking melody and featuring a steady kickdrum, without any breakdowns. A lot of new psy productions, especially the ones originating in Scandinavia can be classified under this category.
(Side note, did you listen to "Symphonatic" by Infected Mushroom ? ... wow !)
