Having just broken onto the trance scene, I know very little about the artists. Are there any you would recommend to someone who likes Juno Reactor?

Eat Static
Der Dritte Raum
Medicine Drum
X-Dream

Have you heard Eat Static's 1991 releases?

Yeah if you like juno reactor, chances are you're more into the psychedelic side of things. I reckon juno's style is rather unique though

I've heard the "Prepare Your Spirit" release if that's what you're thinking of. Some good stuff on there, even though some of it sounds a little dated. Their cd "Abduction" on the other hand, released in 93, is the . Quality from start to finish, a really unique style.

Na, Prepare Your Spirit is from '92. They made 4 tracks in 1991 that were re-released on "The Alien EP's" in 1999.

At first I was going to ask you that, because I had a chance to buy the album on Amazon...but then I happened to get the tracks illegaly. As much as i'd like to own some kickass proto-psytrance, I chose this and this instead. Don't get me wrong the tracks are fine. I just want those two more.

I actually have the We Created Our Own Happiness album from X-Dream; it seems good. I'll have to try those others. Thanks.

mmm....Pistolero Hang 'Em High Remix :tongue2

I can understand that, those cds look damn good. How much did you pay for them?

Okay, I didn't see anything about thread necromancy on here (where are the rules???) and most forums don't mind if you add something useful to the thread, so here goes:

I tried out Medicine Drum and they're okay, but certainly not what I'm looking for. And I don't like X-Dream. These two are quintessential of my conception of psy trance, if that conception of trance is correct, then I don't really like psy. It's just too laid-back.

What I like about Juno Reactor is:

(1) the energy in his music (Labyrinth)
(2) his use of "natural" instruments as opposed to X-Dream's generally electronic sound (Razorback, Conga Fury, Song for Ancestors) (On the other hand, I like the guitar in Swamp Thing in addition to the 3 Koxbox tracks I have been able to legally obtain.)
(3) the use of vocals with or without sparse, but present, non-lyrical or foreign-language vocals (God Is God, Song For Ancestors, Pistolero, Conquistador II) (Although, if there's actually something out there without cheesey poetry like "My love for you is like the wind that ruffles the hair on a baby's bottom," I'd be open to it.)
(4) the unique (from what I've heard, anyway) or neat sounds he occassionally comes up with (Giant, God Is God, Ice Cube, Insects), sort of like what you might find in uplifting trance like Mistral
(5) the variety of his sound even just within one album - not particularly important, but variety is nice

Probably too specific - my guess is I'm going the wrong direction by looking at psychedelic, am I right?

psy, laid-back??? :eyes: :eyes: Listen to some Neuromotor or Talamasca, maybe Astrix? Psy is called psychadelic for a reason.. it makes you feel like you're on a drug trip, the drums pound while the panning effects confuse and contort your brain, usually around 145 bpm... not what i call laid back.

i love Ben Watkins' work.. he's an amazing producer.. you hear Juno reactor and you just KNOW it's juno reactor. I own all of his albums for a reason; they are unique and highly entertaining. It's the kind of EDM you can show your uninitiated friends and they will generally appreciate it right away, but as an EDM aficionado you can revel in the layers of effects and sounds in which you always seem to discover something new in every listen.
