Hardware synths

Hi there, newbie here!

Hope you're all okay and that I'm okay asking a few questions for those with some good knowledge on hardware synths?

I'm just getting into production, for the time being I'm using Logic 5.5 on a PC but planning on eventually getting a Mac with Logic 7 (no doubt there'll be an advance on 7 by then...). I've played around a lot with percussion and the VST synths I've managed to get hold of, Pro-53, Vanguard and the like, but am now looking into the possibility of buying some hardware synths.

To put it across as simple as I can, my main questions are...

- The Korg Trinity v3, and the Korg Triton LE/EX 61, is the Triton an advance on the Trinity or are they vastly different from one another?

- What makes the EX61 so much better than the LE61?

- Baring in mind I'm into trance/tech-trance, i.e. Marco V, Nu NRG etc, what other hardware synths would you recommend? I've been looking at a Novation Supernova 2 (however they don't come cheap!), the Access Virus C (there's a new one out now though isn't there?) which seems to be quite hard to come by?

Just want to be 100% sure I'm looking at the right synths before I go out spending :)

Thanks for your time and help!

Hi there newbie :D

I really can't say what's the difference between the two Korgs you mention since i've never used them. I also don't get why exactly you are interested to know the differences. Suppose you'd like to buy one of them? If that's the case, i'd recommend not to buy any of them. The reasons are quite a lot. Mainly since you are into trance/tech trance i don't think these Korgs have something in particular to offer you. They are workstations which means that they have a variety of sounds covering all music styles(including dance styles) but these sounds are still not the ideal not only for trance but for many other dance styles. Besides that, Korg unfortunately for all of us, didn't really progressed on developing new and good dance sounds which at least would worth buying any of their workstations.

If you want to have in your set up a general synth module i'd suggest to go for a second hand Roland JV-1080 or JV-2080 which you can find really cheap these days. And again Roland's legacy on dance sounds can not be compared at all with Korg's.

On the other hand with today's VST instruments you can have a huge palette of any kind of sound you may want.

So, as a conclusion, and in my personal opinion the best choice for you would be to go for dedicated hardware dance synths like the virus you mentioned. All of them are good. Everyone has its strong points. If you could afford it you should have as many as possible.

The only solution is to listen to all of them or at least to the ones you are mostly interested and choose the one that satisfies you more regarding your personal sound and what you have in your mind.

Hope i helped.

Cheers

Hi,

Thanks for the reply and advice. I've since found out that the Triton is an advance on the Trinity, and also that it's very true what you say about the Korg's, they don't really specialise in the sounds I will most likely want to recreate or get out of it.

I will have a look and read up on the Roland's you mention. I've also been pointed in the direction of a Nord Lead 3 as one I should find useful.

Thanks again for your advice, it has been a great help already :)

Hehe :p

I'm actually enjoying playing around with the softsynths and I'm probably best learning them inside out before I get into hardware synths. But it's more the fact that if I know exactly what I'm looking for, and stumble across what I would like 2nd hand at a decent price, I'll know to get it whilst I can! :happy2:
