maybe that's just another way of preparing us for the future..:whip:

although, I don't have too many complaints about Ryerson..

So this is what happened.

I'm in grad school. And when you are in grad school, you go to school, but you get paid a stipend. Out of your stipend you have to pay tuition, and live off the measley stuff that is left over. But the saving grace is that you don't have to pay your entire tuition off at once but pay it monthly and only pay them how much you can afford at the time while paying off all other bills. So since September, I have been getting a monthly pay and slowly paying off my tuition. I sort of budgetted for the entire year and from my pay each month was planning to pay off tuition slowly.

Today I find out I got a scholarship. Well u may think that is awesome. But it's not, the scholarship doesn't mean I get more money, it just means that my total comes from different places. The scholarship is a lump sum and automatically pays off the rest of the tuition but in a huge lump sum.

So now, I'm stuck getting half of the pay I was getting before per month. And so now I will have half as much to live on. Great my tuition is paid off but with money that I need to live day to day. I was going to get a bursary in January (or at least apply for one) but now I won't even make rent January 1st.

The ing clincher is that that everyone is supposed to find out about these scholarships in September, not ing December when you have already made your budget for the year.

So it pretty much goes to show you that they don't ever think about the student on a individual basis. I can't go there and say, "Hey give me my money back, I will pay you slowly." I can do much better things with the cash over a longer period of time. Even if I stored it away in a high interest bank account for 6 months, I could have earned myself 10 dollars or some bull like that.

oh I hear ya on that. They expect your documents and info years ahead of time to get things set up at school. But then they will take their sweet-ass time making their own decisions about your money, courses etc. I guess they don't realize that people have to PLAN.

Twice already I've had a semester carefully budgeted, only to have my OSAP practically cut in half (re-adjustment they call it, translation: we don't want to give you money), just before the semester starts.

In a way I believe it is - real life (especially in business) isn't just about how much you know, but how you're able to deal with stressful, unfair, or downright ridiculous situations. Dealing with bureaucracy is a valuable skill that's difficult to learn...

I don't think that's the *intention* though, just the way it is.

Well Ryerson isn't really a university. :p
(kidding! But seriously, they are fairly new at the university thing, they haven't had as much time as U of T or Queen's to develop a full-fledged bloated bureaucracy!)

Margs: it's ed up that they actually reduce your stipend if you get a scholarship. Have you tried talking to/yelling at anyone yet? I'm sure if you talk to the right people, you can get it sorted out. The trick with universities is finding the right people and not getting the runaround... accountability is low in academia.

Well, it is awesome in that it means they think you're smart, that you have potential and that you've contributed. :)

it's not an academic scholarship. it's a "you're poor, ha ha, and you need your money but we are going to ing you over by giving you this" scholarship.
