Waaa! Boo on MS! I downloaded spyware, MS has crap security!
Microsoft always has been and always will be on the ball. Look at this as a warning shot over FireFox's bow.
Bundle best-of-breed spyware/security software solution into the OS/browser and the "FireFox has better security" idea evaporates.
Thank you, come again.

Microsoft Acquires Anti-spyware Leader Giant Company Software Inc.
New offerings will help customers keep spyware and other deceptive software off of their computers.
On December 16, 2004, Microsoft announced its acquisition of GIANT Company Software, Inc., a provider of top-rated anti-spyware and Internet security products. Microsoft will use the acquisition to provide its customers with new tools to help protect them from the threat of spyware and other deceptive software. In addition, key personnel from Giant will be joining Microsoft’s security efforts.
Microsoft plans to make available a beta version of a spyware protection, detection, and removal tool, based on the Giant AntiSpyware product, within one month for Microsoft customers. The upcoming beta will scan a customer’s PC to locate spyware and other deceptive software threats and enable customers to remove them. The tool will be configurable to block known spyware and other unwanted software from being installed on the computer. It will be available for Windows 2000 and later

----------------------------
Before the acquisition, Giant Company's anti-spyware application was sold for $29.95, with free upgrades and updates for one year. The company also marketed tools for spam and pop-up detection.
During a recent test by renowned spyware researcher Eric Howes, the Giant detection and removal tool rated the best among the 20 applications tested, even though there were criticisms that it missed several "critical" files and registry entries.

Despite those shortcomings, Howes believes Microsoft made an "excellent decision" to buy Giant to power its anti-spyware move.
"Microsoft made an excellent purchase here. Giant has a very well-done product. I tested all the major tools back in October, and Giant came out on top," Howes told eWEEK.com.
"It's a very young application, and they have to bolt some things down here and there. But, in general, it's an excellent application," Howes added.

| lol, just cause microsoft bought the best, it doesn't mean that they will actually implement the technology. Classic microsoft "buy up the competition and continue to produce weak products that require constant updates" business move |

Finally !!
This comes as a surprise to me though, since after reading numerous interviews with MS Execs, it appeared to me that Windows is a secure operating system  |

A lot of Microsoft's new "security" is actually pissing me off. When you have to bolt things down so hard that a piece of software is totally "idiot-proof", it's a sign of serious design flaws. A perfect example is Outlook 2003 and how it's COMPLETELY impossible to allow access to certain attachments; I tried to e-mail an Access database to myself at work and I COULDN'T RETRIEVE IT! There are NO settings ANYWHERE within the program to disable this security "feature". Apparently there are some registry tweaks or something, but they're undocumented and even if they were documented it would be ridiculous.
It's possible to have a secure OS/software and not treat ALL your users like complete idiots. The *nix kernel is the model of security and Microsoft would be wise to follow it instead of placing arbitrary restrictions on their software because some idiots aren't smart enough not to open the .vbs file that came in their e-mail from a total stranger. In *nix there is a concept of a user environment, and individual users can operate the system with almost the same level of functionality as an Administrator on Windows, except that it's impossible for them to up the system.
Whoopie , Microsoft bought out the assets of a company that makes an anti-spyware product. So what? That doesn't mean that their own software is going to become any more secure; it just means that they're going to be rebranding a tool that's already out there to eliminate system-wide -ups that would never have happened in the first place if security wasn't so ty.
Don't get me wrong, I think Microsoft *IS* starting to get the hang of proper security and software best practices. I just wiped out my computer at work and installed Windows Server 2003 on it and I must say it works beautifully. But this buyout really doesn't mean - no matter how good their operating systems get, they are still operating on an intrinsically flawed security model. |

Annoying punctuation? For it to be punctuation, doesn't it have to punctuate something? Those were obviously arrows pointing at your essay above.
PS: Microsoft Sucks |

If you're going to get technical, then they are carets, not arrows.
Just because I divide it into paragraphs for better readability doesn't make it an essay. I've written essays on this forum before - that wasn't one of them. As for Dallas, half her posts are always random punctuation characters, whether or not they are punctuating anything (usually they aren't). |
