turntableism

I saw some thing the other day on tv where these 4 guys where scratching and doing tt tricks and stuff, and the crowd was going wild.
Now this is all very nice and all, and they are very talented etc etc.
But how the hell can one listen to it for more than 20 minutes? I mean you can't dance to it, after a while they start doing it with their feet and heads and stuff(But who cares?), and even though they take new songs I don't think I would be able to sit through one set of turntableism, it somehow starts to bore the out of me.
I don't listen to hip hop and rap etc btw.

I agree. There is no way that I could handle a set full of turntablism, ie scratching the hell out of anything and everything.
However, turntablism can be applied quite well to a set, as evident by Zabiela's incredible sets. |

| Because it's an acquired taste, unlike the music you currently listen to. |

Turntablist battles aren't meant to be danced to, its just exhibitionism: turntablism for it's own sake. Proper use of turntablism is to enhance a set, not to dominate it. That's what you don't seem to understand about it. A good turntablist and a good DJ are whole different subjects. |

I was not refering to the use of turntablism to inhance a set, and I am well aware that it can make a set an awsome experience, I am refering to the pure turntableist performance, even though it is an exibition of turntable skills, I can't think of listening to something like that for more than a few minutes, yet there seems to be shows going for hours. I donno how people can dance to it, cause I saw the audience dance, it doesn't flow, it must have taken the DJ hours to learn, frankly it seems abit pointless. |

| Turntablism is about playing turntables as musical instruments, which doesn't have to invole scratching. |

No. Every turntablist is a DJ. Every DJ is not a turntablist.
Now, if you'll take a listen to the Scratch Perverts Essential Mix(which probably should have won) from this year, you'll see how turntablism is used to enhance a set rather than how it's used in a battle. What you were watching was probably a DMC battle. It's called a competition. A competition to test the skills of the best. It's no different than any other, such as the Super Bowl, World Poker Championships, World Cup, Indy 500, Mr. Olympia, and so on. Of course many believe all those things are pointless as well.
There are only two non-hip hop playing DJ's who I know have competed in the DMC:
Anthony Pappa

| I sort of liken it to jazz. I particularly don't care for either, but there are those that do, so be it. EDM djs do it? I didn't know that and am totallly surprised because i thought it was only hip-hop djs. Seems out of place for a EDM. |

Well, alot of turntablism doesnt involves any hip hop records, or any sort of electronic music for that matter.
People go like OMG JAMES ZABIELA omg he makes turntablism 1337 in EDM.
He's probably still my favorite breaks dj, but people need to stop focusing on his scratching, as he has a machine does it for him 98%(i'm talking about using the trans effect on the 500) of the time.(i'm talking about using the trans effect on the 500) He does it for fun, and it does sound nice alot of the time, but its certainly nothing fancy, and i would be reluctant to call it "turntablism" He does know how to scratch the old fashion way, I've seen him do it once, but i dont think he does often. |
