| as everyone has mentioned already - chill and enjoy what you are doing. but a word of advice though - ALWAYS take a piss right before going on stage.. its almost a ritual and it calms you down a bit also. |

i've been playing for almost 7 years now and i still get nervous sometimes when i play with other dj's. at the same time you can really have fun because they DO understand what you're doing. it can unlock doors for you... especially if it's in a really relaxed atmosphere. sometimes that's when i go big and really start busting out just cuz me & the other guy are secretly trying to outdo each other but we're not letting ups get to us.
if you're ever skateboarded or done any other extreme sport you can almost relate that to dj'ing in some senses. especially if you're into tricks. not sure if you see the relation or not... but the point is do your best to up and the respect comes automatically. show a good attitude if you up and the respect will still come. just don't get down on yourself over anything cuz it'll just ruin your mood :) |

| It's a common thing to be nervous so just take it slow, enjoy yourself and never worry about them. Play it from your heart and soul and itll come out awesome. |

Don't worry mate... no one is... just ask Brandon Block.
The thing with other DJs around you is that if they actually do give you a hard time it's only because they see you as a threat. As long as you are aware of your own abilities and have confidence in them people on the whole will respect that.
As I said before, the worst critics you will get are not the DJs you are working with but the ones who have never played out listening to you in the crowd. But it is worth ignoring them as they honestly don't know the score yet.
Cheers

i spin drunk every week
it's almost to the point where my mixing is getting to be better while drunk than sober
i find it loosens me up a bit more and i get into a groove easier and better
and like nem said, it's the people who don't know what it's like who give you the hard time
at least here the working djs pretty much all know each other and we know that we're not all dj machines and things up every now and then, that's life
mistakes happen, it's how quick you notice and fix them that will set you apart |

veeeerrrry true. bedroom DJs pretend to know it all and be hardasses about mixing. i've rarely heard a local DJ take a shot at another one (even when it's due). well, at least not in public... |

...and on spinning drunk:
just like spinning sober, the only way to learn is to practice, practice, practice! :p
my first "gig", after i spun for 2 hours and the next DJ took over, i got pretty wasted. then at about 4am, when only about 15 peeps were left, i was asked to mix a couple whilst the current DJ got a few drinks. i got my vinyl, cued it up, let go. i can hear both records in my head, yet i cannot tell WHAT THE is going on. i stop my cued record. i get a feel for the live one. i dance to it. i start cueing the record, back and forth (whilst dancing like an idiot, of course), let go. STILL, nothing. lather, rinse, repeat. long story short: live record runs out, everyone looks at me, i yell "sorry! i'm drunk!" luckily, we're amongst friends, they laugh and reply "understandable then." i quickly get the last DJ to come on, after slapping the volume fader up on the record i was cueing.
a few months later, more or less the same situation happens. only this time, i'm mixing pretty damn well for being drunk. very few and small ups, corrected quickly. my number one problem was when i cued a track up whilst it's volume fader was fully up. luckily, i was messing around with the CUE button on the CD deck, sampling a vocal for my own recreation in the headphones, thinking it'd be cool to do such a thing live. it sounded god in the phones, and i had almost decided to do it. turns out i just had.
my third and last experience mixing drunk resulted in the set of my life. 2 hours of sharply mixed progressive with bits of electro, acid and tech house. to this day, it is a mystery to even me how the hell i managed that set... |
