what are you mainly gonna be using it for? short film, documentation, or like family stuff?
for my tastes, i like the first one because that three hundered extra you could get some nicer equipment |

I think the first one looks better, but with the second one your resolution is going to be 2x as big, making the video a lot better (imo) |

i'm gonna be using it for wildlife documentation...
the second one looks really attractive cause of the better picture... however the first one is offered by B&H electronics with a pretty sweet bundle- it comes with a wide angle lens, tripod, special bag, etc. |

Don't go near the second one. The first one is a better choice, especially for the fact that you get a telephoto lense. The first one is more for shooting your family on christmas morning. You say you're using it for wild-life documentation, well don't expect good results from either, as neither offer much manual control.
If you're serious into film making, no matter the genre, and aren't just shooting for fun, and have the money, take a look at the Canon XL1 or the JVC GR-HD1. Both are amazing cameras, and are for the professional-amature, but cost quite much.
Though, if those are out of the question, and only the two you posted are in your mind, I really do suggest you get the DCR-HC85, along with a good tripod and lots of battery power! |

right, i'm leaning towards the first one now...
however when i called sony they made a big deal about the picture being noticably better with the second one... so the better picture isn't worth it? |
