Clearing your HD

How do you clear your harddrive out? I mean how do you decide what to keep and what to delete. I used to just buy new harddrives, but i ran out of IDE slots, so then i bought an IDE controller, then the harddrives fail a few times. Now i no longer buy new harddrives. I really don't like burning stuff. I already burnt about 24 gigs or so today to clear space. Now time to delete. But it's always a hard choice.

hmm.. to clear junk, i usually either use the old fashioned format and partition routine .. or use the prog "gdisk" .. clears your hard drive ..

if you are looking forward to blanking your "whole" hard drive with 0's, then don't look at me .. got child p0rn to hide from the feds ... hmmmm... ?????. hahhahahaa ...

but i just bought a hard drive to act as my main data storage .. put all my music and important docs and progs on it .. my other hd i use as my boot drive

I used to encrpty my drives.. that's how i lost 160 gigs before. The excryption key was on the main drive, but aslo gave access to my other 2 drives. One day the master drive failed and could not gain access to the key. (actually the key was hidden in a picture and i forgot what picture) there was NO way to recover the key. at 1433 bit encrytion the only thing i could do was reformat everything. That's the first time i really wanted to cry. :(

I just burn an assload of data cd's or dvd's. I rarely listen to music on the computer, mostly in the car. My deck plays mp3 cd's. They act as my copies. I just hope they never get stolen or lost.

Its much easier to have a spindle or 8 laying around instead of worrying about what to keep and what not to keep. Just burn it! :D

Here is my filing system, I use 3 drives.

Drive A: 120GB - Only applications and my design and client files.

Drive B: 120GB - Music, Games, Downloads, test files, etc. I have a meticulous filing system where things get rotated and sent to the burn unit as I have multiple ftps going in and out. I sometimes go through 20+GB of data a week on this drive so I update it frequently.

Drive C: external 160GB - This drive is only used for backups at the moment. I have software that backs up crucial files. It is an external firewire/usb combo incase I need to bring to another computer for rescue or to share client files.

Really if you have a good file system you don't have to worry about a big mess. I have 90+GB free on drive A, I fluctuate between 20-90GB free on drive B and drive D has 90% free.
