Okay...this was really picking my brain lately, since I started to record in digital (DN-X1500 with a M-Audio Firewire Audiophile). My question is when u put a CD in ur cd-rom and rip it, is the signal path like this:
Cd-Rom starts in digital
Converts to Analog (D/A)
Goes to Soundcard
Converts back to Digital (A/D)
Then records on HD
Please correct me if I am wrong here
My question is, I have a CD-Player that has a digital out, would I get less loss in signal if I record with the digital out of the cd-player to my computer? (because it remains in Digital throughout the whole process, and not having to go through all the D/A, A/D conversions....)
Thanks! |

most cd rippers can rip right from the datastream coming off the CD rom drive... it has no A/D conversion. |
Yes. In windows you can just click on the drive properties and make sure the digital audio check box is checked. Or as long as the CD audio cable (inside the computer) is not running to the soundcard you can be sure no d/a conversion is happening. |

indeedy.
don't bother wiring your cd deck to the input of your soundcard, its more un-needed wires :) |
