What's up T.A's?? Well... I been dj-ing for a little over a year.
I am from Chicago where trance is kinda big but not all that much compared to U.K & Cananda.

I have been stuggling with beatmatching a lot.I think it's becuase I started on a DJm 600 (with a bpm counter) & some CDJ800's (bpm counter)Now I am noticing I am trusting my eyes more than my ears.

On top of that people rip on me cause I mix that pcd spins. Now I am not no wanna be PVD I like him a fan and all.I can't help it that I like that smae he likes.

Whenever I go to spin at a place it is so hard because the people wanna here. Regaton,Rap,Hip-Hop,Progressive,House,Hard-House

I don't spin that !!! I am part of a crew called Fusionprocutions
We throw events every once in while.People talk bout me cause I play trance. When they never even give it a chance.

I am struggling now because Not only am I getting frustrated on my mixing skills but I wonder do I really want to continue Dj-ing and hope it actually goes somewhere.Even though I know I have a slim chance.

Should I keep going? I mean I do this on the side. I am a "Computer Desktop Support Manager" so i have a real job & eventually I want to do Security Consulting so i do have a career plan.

Have any of you ever had this problem?
How can I improve Dj skillz *beatmatching* any tricks?

I know if I do keep going there is a 99% i am going to start using FS any reason why not?

Please any help or thoughts maybe situations you guys were in.

PLease dont reply and flame me or make rude statments.

you suck --- i had to flame you just for adding that at the end of your post.

Now, in all seriousness. play what you like. don't give in to everyone talking about you. obviously you're not playing the right venues or gigs. i play progressive and it is hard to find a club that likes my style. i don't blame them since my style is a more toned down lounge style and people are looking more for the energetic-get-girls-to-grind-and-guys-to-drink style.

hang in there buddy. don't give up on it. tape over your counters. rely on your ears. keep it a hobby and having fun until you get that big break. thats my best advice for you.

just practice more and spin what u enjoy which will help u practice more

trance is usually only accepted in chicago when the big boys come to town or other headlining djs. all the warm-up djs play some sort of house/prog/techy sounding warmup stuff. either that or they are playing at a house-only night. if you spin at one of those smaller clubs, a lot want to hear the more popular sound (which happens to be hip hop at the moment). if you like spinning trance, spin trance, use other outlets to get heard than spinning in chicago. you need to build a following, or a least a few friends that respect you and dont tell you that ya suck the whole time. also, you need to spin at places that are accepting to your music. we just had this discussion in here a week or so ago... why would you agreee to play out at a hip hop party if you only spin trance?

it sounds like you are planning on doing computer shiznit for a fulltime job.. if that is the case, this is just your hobby or just for fun.. if so, treat it that way. do it just for fun, if you play out of $$ comes it, treat it as a bonus. dont worry so much about what others think, or what production crew you are in at the moment or anything like that.. just play cuz you love the music.

Organise your own night dude - advertise it as a trance night, and then if any monkey wants hip hop they can get fcuked! You'll also be guaranteed a set! ;)

Youre getting from ignorant people, them. You spin in the first place for yourself because you love it.
Alot of my friends are djs, and some of them even international ( ministry of Sound London, Pacha London, etc ). Whenever we throw a bday party for one of these guys we'll just get together as a bunch of friends spinning and drinking the whole night long. I spin too on those nights, and i can compare easily, that i, with the current practice i make, will not ever gain that level of DJing. And i dont necasserely (sp?) want that! I mean its nice to get gigs but i wont depend on it. Well anyway, i never gave up spinning because of that, and i still love spinning because i love the music. What if you dont get a big break, so what. You said yourself you had a career plan, thats good man! Just spin for yourself and for youre trance loving friends. ( seriously, the best parties in my life are about 15 friends in a backyard or something, spinning and drinking and BBQing or something).

PS. About beatmatching... Just go and practice. It is THE single most important part of DJing. Start over, you know what a good beatmatch sounds like, so you'll know when you get it right.

i have to totally agree with the coments about these people who bitch behind your back. them. to be honest, by the sounds of it they probably wouldn't even know what PvD plays if it smacked them in the face, and thus only think you play the same stuff out of ignorance. just like my dad, he still thinks i play the same stuff i played 2 years ago, when infact i have gone through trance, prog, hard trance, and now play techno. he is an ignorant twat too! so yeah, ignore them.

as far as your mixing skills are concerned, IGNORE THE BEAT COUNTERS!!!! the only use for them is on the djm mixers, for use with the effects. other than that, switch them off, tape over them (not the one on your mixer though, that one is useful) get a black marker and scribble them out, do what you have to do to rid them from your life. trust your ears, and trust your own judgement (the most important bit about djing).

and as others have said, practice, practice, practice, and them when you've done practicing, practice some more. ;)
